I would not spend ANY money on HW until you hear what is said at the
WoA. More I cannot say at this time (as usual) BUT I *imagine* that
what is revealed in London will affect the upgrade paths of the

Errm, well sometimes.   Its not what I would call stable on my computer
though.
There is another prog that can do PDF.   Its called GhostScript, or
Ghostwriter or something like that.

Thats the files from the Cache. VNG has a MAJOR bug whereby it dumps the cache
files to SYS: if it can't find the path, although I /thought/ this was fixed
in
the latest version. 2.95 is the latest, is that what you're using ?
There are some strange problems with VNG 2.95 cache, the cachebrowser is a bit
dicky, and the cache system doesn't work to well IIRC.
FWIW, my Cache directory is set to PROGDIR:Cache and the size is set to 0MB.
A quick scan with Opus reveils its currently at 23535 bytes, so there is a bug
for a start :) And you can tell I don't use it much aswell :))

Have tried both of the above progs without any success. A while back AF
suggested GhostScript in answer to a readers query. I suggested to them that a
tutorial on it might be in order. As of yet there has been no response. I
suspect they can't get it to work either.

Its a very interesting post indeed.   This is the biggest hint yet
about the importance of the WOA announcement.
Fleecy is Fleecy Moss, who (amongst other things) was responsible for
the creation of ICOA and is working on the OS3.5 update.   He's in
about as good a position as you can be to know what Amiga Inc is

I think the BoXeR has no CUP as standard, but it wall probably come
with just about every model of CPU as options.

For example, a 64Mb 72pin EDO SIMM will cost you £233, a 64Mb 168pin
DIMM will cost you £116 from the same shop. DIMM memory is also
faster, but I don't know by how much. The fact that the BoXeR has
72pin sockets means that I can use my existing 16Mb SIMM if I upgrade.

I would have liked to see emulation in the current setup. When the
first Power Macs came out they had 60-66MHz 601s, they could only
emulate a slow '040 Mac (if that). With the minimum spec of modern
Amigas being 160MHz 603e, the kind of 68K performance might outperform
even the fastest '060s, and if it can't then the quad 604s of the

My First Hard Drive from First Computers came as HD, whick I have to admit
seemed strange to start with but it has rather grown on me.
My next Hard Drive I set up as HD.
With my latest 2.1Gig Hard Drive I was having a few problems getting it to
format / partion with , as you may remember.
It might be that during all the confusion I forgot to set it up as HD but I
am sure I was having trouble doing this with a Hard Drive.
Basically the easiest way round your problem, assuming you don't want to
mess about starting from scratch , i.e set up / Partition (RDB) etc, is to
just add an Assign to your startup-sequence or even User-Startup (might be
safer).
eg
          ASSIGN DH0: HD0:
          ASSIGN DH1: HD1:
for all your partitions, that way you can use both DH an HD

I don't think those figures are correct, although I'm in no situation to quote
alternatives. I'm sure that the 200MHz 604e find it hard to match the 060
under
emulation. I may be wrong, but I'm sure I read that in CU or on the mailing

vanished. It was in ftp://ftp.us.vapor.com last time I checked though.

I'm a bit puzzled here.   What does it matter what names the physical
partitions are (mine were Sid, Bert & Fred last time I repartitioned)?
Just click on the icon and give it a convenient name there.
Its not like CDs where the volume name changes all the time. :)

Ah, but the point isn't the exact amount they quoted, its a comparison
of the amount of quoting compared to the amount of new information
that they gave. ;)
Although anyone forwarding mails is going to come out with a really

Yes, but here's the catch.   SIMM is Single Inline Memory Module, DIMM
is /Dual/ Inline Memory Module.   They aren't directly compatible.   If
you used DIMMs you'd need to give the option to use SIMMs thus bumping
up the cost price of the motherboard.
Its a pretty safe bet that many people buying a BoXeR will have
various SIMMs lying about already.

Depends on how you define emulation.   If we're talking about full
custom chip emulation like UAE then not a hope.   You'd probably get
the speed of a 68030 at most.
If however, you're talking about simply emulating the 680x0 itself
then you could certainly mathc the 060 for speed.   The BoXeR already
has the appropriate custom chips so that might be possible.
But there's a catch.   The custom chips and the OS rely on each other
working in a particular way.   Various speeds are effectively hard
coded into the OS.
Without a proper OS port you will never get the full speed out of the
AmigaOS.

Subject: Electricity
Hi all,
Off topic here, but interesting. I just recieved my yearly budget plan from
the Electric board, seems they OWE ME £314!!. Turns out that in the past
year we have only used the same amount of electric as a lightbulb :-)) So
the woman said when I phoned to ask for the refund. The interesting thing
is the meter reading that they took a week ago and the one I did now is
more than the years electricity. It will be interesting when the bloke
comes again on wednesday to take another reading, still I can always say
the Amiga is obviously the better computer since it uses so little
electricity :-))
Bet they say the meter is faulty, then the battle begins.....

Hi Paul Ferguson, on 26-Apr-98 12:00:37 you caught my attention with the following prose:
>>Those of you highlighted in blue, hang your heads in
>> shame! ;)
Darn, missed the stats post! I got a pile of bad disk errors when I went
online yesterday and ended up having to run validatethor to sort my
messagebase out. It does this by flagging the offending mails (hundreds in
my case) for deletion.
This happened purely because I never turned the power on to my CDRW drive!
It seems that because I have a SCSI terminator on that (no choice it's the
last device) it needs power to function. Dunno why but I just assumed data
would flow up there and bounce back whether it was off or on. If that was
the only problem it's giving me I'd be happy. So far I've been unable to
get it to function as a writeable drive too. :-/
Flipping CDRW's getting on my nerves. It struggles with the awesome task of
playing an audio CD! Gets so far through it then cuts out - then back in,
then out etc. Very annoying when recording. I've tried about 8 different
CD Players (Opty_CDPlayer looks powerful) but they all do it so it's not
the players. The sound output is far louder and crisper than my internal
CD drive. Must be because with that I use an adaptor that goes into the
headphone socket, into the Prelude and from the Prelude to my hi-fi.

Nope it's not the players is it.....not with symptoms like that. Can you put

Okay, I /think/ the problem is that   YAM2 now has its own
multi-address
setup.   Which is different from the old approach of Multiple YAMs
The problem here is that it downloads everything from those addresses
and its up to you to set up filters to sort things out.
That seems to be how it works anyway.

Subject: Beta testers required
Hi :)
Well I've been talking about it for ages, but I finally found time to
write my "web page monitor".
Essentially what it does is check certain pages (specified by the
user) at regular intervals and if they have changed it downloads the
new version. It scans the HTML for local images and downloads them
too.   Finally it changes all HREF's to point to the correct server so
that you can follow all the links correctly.   Then it creates a list
of the updated pages in HTML and runs IBrowse to show them.
The program isn't complete yet.   Its an early beta.   There are
features missing and some probably don't work quite as they should.
So what I'm looking for is a few people who don't mind the occasional
crash who can point out the bugs and also suggest additional features.
It'll probably be a couple of days before I have a version to send to
you.   There are a few speicfic references to my system in the code at
the moment.

A true story from the WordPerfect helpline. Needless to say the help =
=
desk employee was fired; however, he/she is currently suing the     =
WordPerfect organization for "Termination without Cause".
Actual dialog of a former Wordperfect Customer Support employee:
"Ridge Hall computer assistant; may I help you?"
"Yes, well, I'm having trouble with WordPerfect."
"What sort of trouble?"
"Well, I was just typing along, and all of a sudden the words went
away."
"Went away?"
"They disappeared."
"Hmm. So what does your screen look like now?"
"Nothing."
"Nothing?"
"It's blank; it won't accept anything when I type."
"Are you still in WordPerfect, or did you get out?"
"How do I tell?"
"Can you see the C: prompt on the screen?"
"What's a sea-prompt?"
"Never mind. Can you move the cursor around on the screen?"
"There isn't any cursor: I told you, it won't accept anything I     =
type."
"Does your monitor have a power indicator?"
"What's a monitor?"
"It's the thing with the screen on it that looks like a TV. Does     =
it have a little light that tells you when it's on?"
"I don't know."
"Well, then look on the back of the monitor and find where the     =
power cord goes into it.   Can you see that?"
"Yes, I think so."
"Great. Follow the cord to the plug, and tell me if it's plugged     =
into the wall."
"Yes, it is."
"When you were behind the monitor, did you notice that there were
two cables plugged into the back of it, not just one?"
"No."
"Well, there are. I need you to look back there again and find the
other cable."
" Okay, here it is."
"Follow it for me, and tell me if it's plugged securely into the     =
back of your computer."
"I can't reach."
"Uh huh. Well, can you see if it is?"
"No."
"Even if you maybe put your knee on something and lean way over?"
"Oh, it's not because I don't have the right angle - it's because     =
it's dark."
"Dark?"
"Yes -the office light is off, and the only light I have is coming     =
in from the window."
"Well, turn on the office light then."
"I can't."
"No? Why not?"
"Because there's a power outage."
"A power... A power outage? Aha, Okay, we've got it licked now. Do     =
you still have the boxes and manuals and packing stuff your computer   =
came in?"
>
"Well, yes, I keep them in the closet."
"Good. Go get them, and unplug your system and pack it up just     =
like it   was when you got it. Then take it back to the store you
bought =
it from."
"Really? Is it that bad?"
"Yes, I'm afraid it is."
"Well, all right then, I suppose. What do I tell them?"
"Tell them you're too stupid to own a computer."

I only went as far as using MasterISO's test program - which fails to even
begin doing a /pretend/ write. Not sure why and I won't be able to
investigate further for a bit because the CDRW is going back today! The CD
drawer doesn't function anymore. :-( That'll be the 2nd CDRW I've sent back

Hmm..the only slot in my tower that's suitable is taken up by my internal
CD drive. The CDRW is an external device but I think it's easily converted
just by taking the outer casing out. That's a tempting option though when I
eventually upgrade my CD drive. At least then I could eliminate the SCSI
terminator as the problem..
Not a bad stab in the dark there Paul - cheers. :)

Correction to last line-
"Tell them you're too stupid to own an Amiga."
I loved the sketch, whether it is true or not. The really sad thing is that I
have encountered people with this level of intelligence using PCs. No wonder

Subject: HTMLInclude
Hi :)
You may recall the thread between me and Vader about HSC and the fact
it could do cool things but was kind of hard to understand.
Well one of the cool things it could do was allow you to insert other
files into your HTML pages.
Essentially that is what HTMLInclude does.
Its a small CLI program which   requires a source file and a
destination file.
The source file is an ordinary HTML file that contains extra lines
like:
<#INCLUDE DATE> or
<#INCLUDE header.txt>
HTMLInclude finds these lines and replaces them with the appropriate
text.i.e. the date in the first case and whatever happens to be in the
file header.txt in the second case.
Anyone want a copy?

Subject: Discounts on Super Amigas (fwd)
I hope this message is ok on the list , just I thought
it may be of interest to any one in the NW
Ralph Twiss
Hi,
Nigel French of NV Computers is coming to the User Group to give a
demonstration of Amiga
equipment this Sunday
He is going to bring as much hardware as he can and he will give a discount on
anything
that is ordered from him at the meeting. We are looking at a discount of
around 20% so
it may be worthwhile.
When he mailed me a while ago he was talking about PPC equipped Amigas with
64bit
graphics cards and God knows whatever else so it may be worth a look.
If you think of anyone who may be interested in showing up, drag them along
too :-)
Please mail me if you are interested but need any more info.
Simon.

CD's ? I mean, thats one helluva game on high spec PC's or so I'm lead to
believe from the CD Writer list I joined for a while. Maybe the s/ware just
isn't quite right yet ?

Well I think that might be OK as thats how I got an external SCSI CDROM into
my Powerstation all those years ago :)

Hopefully :)

Glad to see I could help you to smile a bit :)

Subject: Introducing HTMLValidate
Hi :)
I'm on a roll this week. ;)
I've just written a little program which scans a web page for links to
*other* web sites.   It then systematically checks each of these links
and stores the result in HTML, flagging each link as either UNCERTAIN,
MOVED, NOT FOUND, or PRESENT.   Took about 3 minutes to check
my link page (45 links) that way.
Anyone want a copy?

Does the %quoting figure derive from the number of words (letters)
of original vs the number of words of quote ? If so I'll have to make
my replies wordier ?
Steve (who has just returned from a course so this is late)
