Subject: Saturdays Joke from Haighy
Pretend you got this over the last 3 days in sections and then you
won't want to flame me for the size of it
Butcher Dance
A guy has spent five years traveling all around the world making a
documentary on Native dances. At the end of this time, he has every
single native dance of every indigenous culture in the world on film.
He winds up in Australia, in Alice Springs, so he pops into a pub
for a well earned beer.
He gets talking to one of the local Aborigines and tells him about his
project. The Aborigine asks the guy what he thought of the "Butcher Dance."
The guy's a bit confused and says "Butcher Dance? What's that?"
"What? You no see Butcher Dance?"
"No, I've never heard of it."
"Oh mate. You crazy. How you say you film every native dance if you
no see Butcher Dance?"
"UmmSUM. I got a corroborree on film just the other week. Is that
what you mean?"
"No, no, not corroborree. Butcher Dance much more important than
corroborree."
"Oh, well how can I see this Butcher Dance then?"
"Mate, Butcher Dance right out bush. Many days travel to go see
Butcher Dance."
"Look, I've been everywhere from the forests of the Amazon, to deepest
darkest Africa, to the frozen wastes of the Arctic filming these dances.
Nothing will prevent me from recording this one last dance."
"OK, mate. You drive north along highway towards Darwin. After you drive
197 miles, you see dirt track veer off to left. Follow dirt track for 126
miles 'til you see big huge dead gum tree - biggest tree you ever see. Here
you gotta leave car, coz much to rough for driving. You strike out due west
into setting sun. You walk 3 days 'til you hit creek. You follow this
creek to Northwest. After 2 days you find where creek flows out of rocky
mountains.   Much too difficult to cross mountains here though. You now head
south for half day 'til you see pass through mountains. Pass very
difficult, very dangerous. Take 2, maybe 3 days to get through rocky pass.
When through, head north-west for 4 days 'til reach big huge rock - 20 ft
high and shaped like man's head. From rock, walk due west for 2 days and
you find village.   Here you see Butcher Dance."
So the guy grabs his camera crew and equipment and heads out. After a
couple of hours he finds the dirt track. The track is in a shocking state
and he's forced to crawl along at a snails pace and so he doesn't reach the
tree until dusk and he's forced to set up camp for the night.
He sets out bright and early the following morning. His spirits are high
and he's excited about the prospect of capturing on film this mysterious
dance which he had never heard mention of before. True to the directions he
has been given, he reaches the creek after three days and follows it for
another two until they reach the rocky mountains.
The merciless sun is starting to take its toll by this time and his spirits
are starting to flag, but wearily he trudges on until he finds the pass
through the hills - nothing will prevent him from completing his life's
dream. The mountains prove to be every bit as treacherous as their guide
said and at times they almost despair of getting their bulky equipment
through. But after three and a half days of back breaking effort they
finally force their way clear and continue their long trek.
When they reach the huge rock, four days later, their water is running low
and their feet are covered with blisters but they steel themselves and head
out on the last leg of their journey. Two days later they virtually stagger
into the village where the natives feed them and and give them fresh water
and they begin to feel like new men. Once he's recovered enough, the guy
goes before the village chief and tells him that he has come to film their
Butcher Dance.
"Oh mate. Very bad you come today. Butcher Dance last night. You too late.
You miss dance."
"Well, when do you hold the next dance?"
"Not 'til next year."
"Well, I've come all this way. Couldn't you just hold an extra dance for
me, tonight?"
"No, no, no! Butcher Dance very holy. Only hold once a year. If hold more,
gods get very angry and destroy village! You want see Butcher Dance you
come back next year." The guy is devastated, but he has no other option but
to head back to civilization and back home.
The following year, he heads back to Australia and, determined not to miss
out again, sets out a week earlier than last time. He is quite willing to
spend a week in the village before the dance is performed in order to
ensure he is present to witness it.
However, right from the start things go wrong. Heavy rains that year have
turned the dirt track to mud and the car gets bogged every few miles,
finally forcing them to abandon their vehicles and slog through the mud on
foot almost half the distance to the tree. They reach the creek and the
mountains without any further hitch, but halfway through the ascent of the
mountain they are struck by a fierce storm which rages for several days,
during which they are forced to cling forlornly to the mountainside
until it subsides. It would be suicide to attempt to scale the treacherous
paths in the face of such savage elements.
Then, before they have traveled a mile out from the mountains, one of the
crew sprains his ankle badly which slows down the rest of their journey to
the rock and then the village enormously. Eventually, having lost all sense
of how long they have been travelling, they stagger into the village at
about 12:00 noon.
"The Butcher Dance!" gasps the guy. "Please don't tell me I'm too late!"
The chief recognizes him and says "No, white fella. Butcher Dance performed
tonight. You come just in time."
Relieved beyond measure, the crew spend the rest of the afternoon setting
up their equipment - preparing to capture the night's ritual on celluloid
As dusk falls, the natives start to cover there bodies in white paint and
adorn themselves in all manner of bird's feathers and animal skins. Once
darkness has settled fully over the land, the natives form a circle around
a huge roaring fire.   A deathly hush descends over performers and
spectators alike as a wizened old figure with elaborate swirling designs
covering his entire body enters the circle and begins to chant. Some sort
of witch doctor or medicine man, figures the guy and he whispers to the
chief "What's he doing?"
"Hush" whispers the chief. "You first white man ever to see most sacred of
our rituals. Must remain silent. Holy man, he asks that the spirits of the
dreamworld watch as we demonstrate our devotion to them through our dance
and, if they like our dancing, will they be so gracious as to watch over us
and protect us for another year."
The chanting of the Holy man reaches a stunning crescendo before he removes
himself from the circle. From somewhere the rhythmic pounding of drums
booms out across the land and the natives begin to sway to the stirring
rhythm.   The guy is becoming caught up in the fervour of the moment
himself.   This is it. He now realizes beyond all doubt that his wait has
not been in vain. He is about to witness the ultimate performance of rhythm
and movement ever conceived by mankind.
The chief strides to his position in the circle and, in a big booming
voice, starts to sing: "You butch yer right arm in. You butch yer right arm
out.   You butch yer right arm in and you shake it all about"
Of course you may want to flame me for the joke itself :-)

I just love it when Windows crashes, you just have to look at it the
wrong way and down it goes. For example, every now and again I will
have a folder on the hard drive that crashes the OS. Just think about
that for a second, it's just a sub-directory, but it's enough to crash
Windows.

I hate it when people are like that. Would they be so quiet if their
cars refused to start up in the morning, or their TV sets turned off
half way through a great film and won't turn on again, or their
cookers kept burning their food? So why just sit back and take it when
their computers don't work, didn't they pay good money for them? Maybe
there should be a letter writing campaign, a mass complaint to a
watchdog TV program, give Micro$oft a good kick up the arse for
shoving their bad software down our throats.

At work I use a Pentium 166 MMX with 64Mb of ram and it doesn't feel
that much faster than my Amiga at all. I used to run a system monitor
that told me how much physical ram my machine had left and out of 64Mb
I would only have about 10-16Mb left after booting up, about the same
as my 18Mb Amiga. The only time I've had to reinstall Workbench is
when my harddrives die, I've gone through 3 in the past 4 or 5 years,
Windows on the other hand needed to be installed twice before it would
even start working, one of my work mates reinstalls Win95 every 3 or 4
weeks.

There ought to be some way of redressing these issues I agree but it seems to
have been going on for so long that it's just accepted.
I think the situation sux but TBH I've not yet found anyone who hasn't been
forced to accept the situation 'cos there's no-one who can tell them how to
correct all the faults they have encountered.

concentrating on getting V-NG done.   There is a note on the web site

Subject: NextStep
Hi :)
Someone asked me about NextStep, but I accidentaly deleted all last
weeks mails without answering.
NextStep is the OS which ran on the "Next" range of computers created
by Steve Jobs when he left Apple.
Essentially is is a UNIX OS with a sophisticated GUI grafted on top of
it, making a difficult OS much easier to use.
NextStep has a number of things in common with AmigaOS including the
fact that it origianly ran on a 68030 machine and boasts low resources
and smooth multi-tasking.
It was a commercial failure though.
A while back Apple bought out Next, and (more importantly NextStep).
This brought Jobs back into the Apple fold which seems to have been
money well spent judging by the current share price.
NextStep is being merged with the Mac System 7/8 to created the long
awaited new OS Rhapsody.
Its basically one of those things which has been hugely influential
without ever becoming known to the general public.

Its far from being like the official PC version, but it does work.

Do you mean an ordinary HTML link or an actual button?
If its an actual button you'd either need to use CGI or JavaScript.

My old A500+ had this problem and was due to the internal chips slowley

due to age. There may be other reasons.

Hi :)
Just to let you know I've updated the news page on the Amiga Chatter
web site.   Nothing earthshattering (or I would post it here), but some
interesting stuff never the less.
I've also signed up for the Amiga News Feed (more details about that
on the site) which means I should be able to keep the news page up to
date and brimming with news. :)

Well you'd either have to use JavaScript which cuts out a lot of
browsers, or CGI in which case you wouldneed to speak to your
provider.   Very often providers only give CGI-bin access to
"commercial" customers.
Or you could just tell them to Shift Click. ;)

The only other thing I've thought of that would cause random atttempts
to access a disk would be a virus.   Not a nice thought, but that would
be fixable at least.

Well there were only 4 posts since your last mail appeared on the

Well I haven't seen any mails from you since I posted the Weekly Stats
on Saturday (at which point I clear out my folder), so if you've sent

Otherwise I suppose you could check the list digest to see if the

Umm... I'm no expert but ICs tend to either work, or not.   They just stop.
Some ICs may have moved around in their sockets (something reported in the
mags I seem to recall).   Whip the lid off and give socketed ICs a shove.

Well I have tried it out, its shell based at the moment, but does work. I
don't know anything about who did it, and there are no docs.
You do need someone with a PC to set up your account. I doubt
its got any official sanction, but it proves it can be done. Just wonder if
anyone will write a GUI for it, or will they now make an official version
so you can set it up etc using the Amiga.

It' doesn't have to mean it's on it's way out. I' used to have this problem with my

sounds about right guess you could   move it elsewhere   in the chain   generally
the controller

hmm well that sounds like your   bringing audio directly across the scsi bus
the easiest would be to check the back of your drive and see if theres an
audio out   and send that out to your amp ect.
other than that   you might   be able to play around a little and raise the

I'd say good because Opera is a well regarded browser with a growing
following on the PC.   Its also set to be a multiplatform browser with
UNIX and Mac version too if I remember rightly.
> I like Opera and use it on my PC but what about other browser

What development?   Finale is months late, the other three each have
*one* person working on them.
I don't see why we should suppport inferior software simply because
the developer only works on Amigas.

Its worth stressing (due to threats of legal action) that this port is
*not* connected to the recent attempt to get a legal version of ICQ on
the Amiga.
That attempt was basically scuppered when someone got impatient and
started a mass email campaign.   Mail bombing is a remarkably poor way
of persuading companies to do things. :)
That said, where can I find it too? ;)

You bet. Just select the articles from the header then mark it.   once

Yeah that may well be but at least we do get updates although very

I don't have to put up with that network anymore (thank god). That was
when I was working at Cardiff University, that would be about 2 or 3
years ago (I'm still just getting over it). But they did have a lot of
other, nicer machines to play with. A large network of Macs, large
looking Sun machines (I wasn't alowed to play with them), and two
Silicon Graphics Indigos, that were used to take 3D pictures of
microbes and stuff.

Hi all,
Just wondering whats the lowest spec PC that I could get away with for
Internet use. Taking into account that it would need to be able to run
RealAudio, and a good browser. It isnt for games, but needs to also run a
good word processor.

Hi all,
Well a few people seem interested in this un-official port. If anyone wants
a copy, small exe file, then email me privately and I will send it on.
If I send you it, dont blame me if anything happens to your HD, it works
fine for me. I haven't a clue who actually did this little program. Its
defiantly not as fancy as the real thing, its shell based, all the commands
are done through that, and some don't work, like the chat option, seems
according to someone else on a PC it says that its an early version of ICQ,
so they couldn't use the chat option to me.
Still once you have your friends listed at least you can tell if they are
online or not, and when they do come online, accross platforms etc.

Hehe well I'm attempting to move on a bit...same company different
job. Despite all the hassle I'm getting from 'my' network I'm trying to get
into the Comms/PC support/Networking department.
So, instead of getting hassle from those 10 or so machines I'd be getting
hassle from...oh....400 or so ...I must be a masochist ;)

The entry level machine is heading towards a P200/P233.   As always the prices
are dropping all the time.
You don't really need a P200 for net access, but it would not be worth buying
anything less.
I find my A4000/030 is almost as fast as the P200 I have when comparing IE4 &
V2.95 !!

Well you should be looking at a P166MMX minimum, but you might find it
hard to find a lot of thses about, most shops will have P233s(it
won't be long before the minimum spec is a PII233). This power isn't
really needed to run wordprocessors or web browsers but the OS. The
choice of gfx card will also make all the difference to a PC. A cheap
£20 job will hold any machine you buy back, go for a Matrox
Mystique card, they're very good and would suit the kind of spec you
seem to be looking for.

Hi,
Bill Clinton, Bill Gates and Al Gore perish in an airplane crash, and
arrive in heaven to find God on his throne.
When God asks Gore what he believes in, Gore answers,"well, I believe
that the internal combustion engine is the root of all evil, and that we
need to save the world from CFCs and that if any more freon is used, the
whole Earth will become a greenhouse and we'll all die." God says, "OK,
come and sit at my left".
And, God asks Clinton what he believes in.   "Well", says Clinton, "I
believe in power to the people. I think people should be able to make
their own choices about things and that no one should be able to tell
someone else what to do".   God nods and says ,"come and sit at my right".
And, then He asks, "Bill Gates, what do you believe?"
"I believe," says Gates, "you're in my chair".

Amiga. Maybe this will give Gates a kick up the rear.
It's nice to know Gateway was not sitting   on there bums all this

for a new machine, that will outpace a P.C. nice!!

Yes they are, but I can't help feeling that the reason only one person

Given that the design philosophy of Opera pretty much mirrors that of

The key difference is that the Opera makers asked people to show their
interest.   With ICQ all that happened is that someone who had been
sympathetic got fed up.

I think a lot of people, including myself, are probably feeling a little
bitter about being encouraged into existing PPC upgrade routes
&c under the understanding that that was the path to the future
that Amiga was going to take.
Not that I'm thinking that Amiga TNG won't be good, and not that
I won't be buying it, cos I will. It just seems unfortunate that /clarity/

Just starts to seem like, every few months, a big name in the Amiga

hardware, and then... a few more months later, they either change it
