Visit the Sarah Center
Sister Jeanette Buehler had a really great idea when she started the jewelry program at the Sarah Center. Here the women of "Over-the-Rhine" a unique innercity Cincinnati neighborhood, come together every Tuesday to make beautiful jewelry.
Many of the women live very difficult lives. Some are on disability, unemployed and most have very modest incomes. The work they do at the center helps them in many ways.
The Sarah Center supplies the materials, tools instructions and a warm and friendly environment. Together the women create jewelry with silver and gold-filled findings along with semi precious stones and glass. With the help of their jewelry instructer, we'll call her Nice lady, and Sis. Jeanette they set up at local arts and craft shows and sell their jewelry.
The women receive 60% of the money from each item they sell. This money is used to supplement their incomes and always comes in handy. More than the money is the boost in self esteem. When people buy their jewelry, it brings smiles and hugs, something they've earned themselves. They create beauty for themselves and others.
The women have been highlighted in the local newspaper and on radio and television shows.
