They're Few And Far Between, But...

I only have two article so far, as, like the title of this page says, articles on Tony are few and far between, nevermind how popular he is, but I hope to add to the page as time goes on and I collect more articles. I'll have to start buying those magazines on a regular basis or something...

Taken from the November 10, 1998 issue of Soap Opera Magazine, this article is in connection with their Best Of article. They named Tony one of the top ten soap actors ever. FYI...they put him at number 6. I think he deserves to be number 1. Oh well....

Even people who have never watched a single episode of a soap know the name Luke Spencer--and Anthony Geary. It's hard to believe it's been 20 years since Geary, with his disheveled blond hair and anit- soap-hero looks, swooped onto the scene and changed the face of Port Charles, N.Y. forever.

As half of the immortal Luke and Laura, Geary (along with co-star Genie Francis, Laura) set a new standard of electic chemistry by which all others have since been measured. To this day, Geary holds the audience in the palm of his powerful hand, as he continues to personify his character with a seamless perfection unsurpassed in the history of daytime.

After leaving the landscape in 1985 for eight interminable years, geary returned in 1993 as Luke's lookalike cousin Bill Eckert. Everyone was thrilled to have Geary back in Port Charles, but they were even happier three years later, when Geary again became Luke and was accompanied by his beloved Laura. With a best actor Emmy, Geary is the king of charisma on daytime.

WEBMISTRESS'S NOTE: Okay, I think these guys goofed with their years here. How do I know they did? Well, I began watching GH in the fall of 1993 and at that time Tony was playing Luke, not Bill. Bill was dead. Lesley Lu had been born recently, and Laura was hiding away with her at Beechers Corners. At the time I started watching, Luke was helping to try and find out who killed Bradley Ward. Yep, I know my recent past, guys. They goofed. But magazines can't be perfect...

This article is extremely short, but so what? It was in the October 12, 1999 issue of Soap Opera Update, as part of their "Stars That Steal Shows" article.

In daytime, the word chemistry is spelled only one way: A-N-T-H-O-N-Y G-E-A-R-Y. The level of electricity when he's on screen is redhot, but that's nothing compared to the praise that's heaped on him by fellow actors. This Emmy winner takes the crown, as his Luke plays every emotion in the most unexpected yet absolutely fine-tuned way. Who wouldn't want to be in a scene with him? He's the most giving of actors. Even as Luke devastated his son and lost his love, this broken man was the sun the actors revolved around. Everyone he works with is blessed by his golden glow.

WEBMISTRESS'S NOTE: Praise for my fave actor...gotta love it! Now if only my scanner was working...then I could get some more pics of him on this site! Darn technology!=)

An Interview! It's in the January 15-21 issue TV Guide (at least, it's in the Canadian TV Guide...don't know about the US one, since they're different).

GH'S LUKE LIGHTENS UP

According to General Hospital's Tony Geary (Luke), the rumors of his departure from the soap--currently burning up the Ineternet--are not true. In fact, the two-time Emmy winner, who's never been shy about voicing his dissatisfaction, insists he's quite content on the show.

TV GUIDE: Is this a new Tony Geary? What happened to the crusty curmudgeon we all know and love?

TONY GEARY: I guess I'm mellowing. My days of whining are over. Sure, I will always wish for more artistic fulfilment, but I have carved out a comfortable place here and I love the actors I work with. But, like Woody Allen said [in Annie Hall], I don't like to get too mellow because I tend to get overripe and rot.

TVG : You really seem to be sparking to the budding romance between Luke and Felicia (the very married heroine played by Kristina Wagner).

GEARY: I like that Luke is causing trouble is somebody's marital life. He hasn't done that since the '70s when he messed with the marriage of Scotty [Kin Shriner] and Laura [Luke's current but estranged wife, played by Genie Francis]. I think the Luke-Felicia relationship makes my character relevant again. Emotionally, his world is at an end. She is a lifeline and he grabs it. As an actress, Kristina lives very much in the moment, which I love. She is a delight, a truly joyful performer. I feel so safe with her, as I do with Genie and as I did with Nancy Grahn [Alexis].

TVG: Come to think of it, whatever happened to all those delicious Luke-Alexis scenes? It looked like they were headed for romance.

GEARY: The powers that be didn't let [the relationship] evolve. They kind of strong-armed it because they wanted the attention put elsewhere. It's just such a mystery.

TVG: What about the buzz that you and Genie don't like working together anymore?

GEARY: I've heard all those rumors. Look, there have been rocky times but neither one of us ever said we wouldn't work with the other. In fact, Genie and I are looking for a play to do together.

TVG: So we haven't seen the last of Luke and Laura as a couple?

GEARY: Felicia is not the great love of Luke's life. We all know who that is, and I think we'll eventually get back to it.

WEBMISTRESS'S NOTE: I don't care how short it is...it's Tony talking in his own words. I absolutely LOVE it. He is just so cool!

If you have an article about Tony, and you think I should put it on this page, please feel free to email me. I just ask that you know which magazine you took the article from, including the date of the issue. And I will say who I got the article from. Don't want to give credit where it isn't due, you know!
