Mulder had been tapping his fingers against the desk all morning. Scully
was about ready to
kill him.
“Mulder,” she said finally looking up from the report she was reading,
“Either you stop that
drumming or I’ll remove your fingers slowly and painfully,”
Mulder glanced up at her with a look that sent pleasurable chills up
Scully’s spine. She
pushed the feeling away.
“Scully can I ask you for advice? Mulder said after a moment. He sounded
almost nervous.
“Yes. However given the problems you have I bet the Lone Gunmen would be
of more help
to you,”
He smiled ruefully at her sending yet another pleasurable chill up
Scully’s spine. She pushed
the feeling away as she always did.
“Well there’s this woman,” he started.
Scully nearly dropped the folder. Where was this going?
“I’ve known her for years and we’ve been best friends. One night a few
weeks ago I was
lying on my couch thinking and then suddenly it hit me. It was amazing...like a
light had been
switched. She’s the most beautiful, intelligent, witty, stubborn woman I know. I
suddenly realized
I’ve been in love with her for a long time,”
With each word he said it felt like a knife had been stuck in Scully’s
stomach and it was
slowly twisting itself around. Her heart constricted painfully. Why was she
feeling this way?
“So what’s the problem?” Scully forced herself to ask. It came out
choked...but Mulder
didn’t seem to notice.
“Well like I said, we’ve been friends for a long time. I value her
friendship...I value her more
then I value my own life. If I were to tell her and she doesn’t feel the same
way it would change
things. What if she runs? What if she never wants to see me again? I don’t think
I could deal with
that,” Mulder said his eyes becoming distant...as if imagining what it would be
like without his
mystery woman.
Scully found herself suddenly struggling to breath. What was wrong with
her? It was
beyond jealousy. She felt like she was losing something. Something she’d taken
for granted that it
would always be there and now it was falling away from her while she could do
nothing to stop it.
“Does she know about your obsession with your work? Your sunflower seed
habit?” Scully
asked.
“Not only does she know but she understands me...she truly and deeply
understands me. She
understands me better then anyone else in this world,” Mulder continued.
Did that mean Mulder thought that she didn’t understand him? Did it mean
that he didn’t
think they were best friends? Was that why she felt so bad?
“Mulder, whoever this woman is...if she can deal with you at your most
obsessive times
..then it’s fate. Tell her Mulder,” Scully said. She quickly got up and turned
her back to him so he
wouldn’t see the tears threatening to fall. She pretended to be putting away the
file she had been
holding.
“So who is this woman? What’s her name,” Scully asked to cover up the
sudden silence.
She felt him move up behind her and lean down next to her ear.
“Dana,” he answered softly. She spun around to find his face inches from
hers. He took her
hands in his.
“Scully I think I can pinpoint the exact moment I fell in love with you.
That first case as we
stood in the middle of a graveyard in the dead of night in the rain and you were
laughing... I wanted
to kiss you. I love you Dana Katherine Scully,” Mulder said finally. He looked
anxiously into her
eyes hoping against hope she would turn and walk away.
The tears in her eyes had started out as tears of sadness...even anguish.
As Mulder had talked
they’d turned into amazed but happy tears, tears of joy. Suddenly Scully knew
what that feeling had
been.
	“Mulder... I... I know. I think I’ve always known. And I think I’ve always
know somewhere
that I love you too,”
He smiled and laughed with relief. One hand dislodged itself from her grip
and he gently
wiped away the tears from her eyes. Then he moved his hand to sweep the back of
her collar while
the other held her right hand firmly against the filling cabinet. Secure in the
fact that nothing would
ruin the moment he leaned down to kiss her.
When they parted Mulder said into Scully’s ear, “Scully can I ask you for
another favor?”
	She laughed softly, “What now?”
“Will you protect me from your brother?”
Scully laughed and responded by kissing him again. That day the two agents
left work early
for once.

Ahh glad I got that out of my system...what mush. Back to my angst story. But
then again even that
has a happy ending.
