A Guide to Dendrochronology
for Educators
These Web pages were created to be used by both teachers and students interested in
learning more about dendrochronology, the study of tree rings. You can use the information
here to supplement a lesson plan or to expand your basic knowledge of dendrochronology
principles. Most of the images here were scanned using the original wood samples. The
captions beside the pictures contain terminology used by dendrochronologists when
referring to tree-ring characteristics.
Dendrochronology:
The Science of Tree Ring Dating
Background information on dendrochronology (who, what, where when),definitions, principles
of dendrochronology, and how climatic changes or patterns in specific geographic areas can
be traced by the study of old living trees.

The Laboratory of
Tree-Ring Research
The Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research was organized in 1937 as an outgrowth of the
pioneering tree-ring studies initiated by Andrew Ellicott Douglass at the University of
Arizona in 1906. A division of the College of Arts and Sciences, the Laboratory conducts a
unique program of teaching and research in all aspects of dendrochronology. Graduate-level
instruction is offered through cooperating academic departments, and a limited number of
graduate research assistantships are available to qualified students. Current research
efforts are directed toward the quantification of tree-ring parameters, the establishment
of new tree-ring chronologies throughout the world, the use of tree-rings in the study of
forest ecosystems, the reconstruction of paleohydrologic and paleoclimatic variables, and
the documentation and development of prehistoric chronological controls.

CURRENT RESEARCH ACTIVITIES: Presently T.R.L scientists are activily working in many parts
of the globe persuing dendrochronological studies. In the boreal forests of Canada,
Alaska, Mongolia, SIBERIA, and Kamchatka Dr's Jacoby and D'Arrigo are studying the ecology
and paleoclimatology of the Northern Hemisphere. In Tasmania, New Zealand and southern
South America, Dr's Cook, D'Arrigo and Villalba are studying paleoclimate records from the
southern himishpere. In Southeast Asia, Nepal, Thailand and Indonesia, Dr's Cook, D'Arrigo
and Krusic are studying ENSO and the Southeast Monsoon.

The National
Climatic Data Center
NCDC is the world's largest active archive of weather data. NCDC produces numerous climate
publications and responds to data requests from all over the world. NCDC operates the
World Data Center-A, Meteorology which is collocated at NCDC.

Tree Rings: A Study
of Climate Change
Tree rings provide a record of local climate during the life of the tree. Many trees are
hundreds of years old, and a few live thousands of years. Thus the rings provide
information that is not available from scientific records.
Tree rings can show where a wooden object was made. Niels Bonde explains Count the tree-rings, map the journey. British Archaeology, no 10, December 1995.
The
University of Victoria Tree-Ring Laboratory
UVTRL was established in September 1992. It consists of a self-contained sample
preparation room and a new laboratory facility. The lab contains two tree-ring measuring
apparatus: i) a Velmex-type measuring stage linked to a digital encoder; and, ii) a
WinDendro computerized tree-ring image processing system.
