From CIA factbook

Bahrain's small size and central location among Persian Gulf countries require it to play a delicate balancing act in foreign affairs among its larger neighbors. Possessing minimal oil reserves, Bahrain has turned to petroleum processing and refining, and has transformed itself into an international banking center. The new amir is pushing economic and political reforms, and has worked to improve relations with the Shi'a community. In 2001, the International Court of Justice awarded the Hawar Islands, long disputed with Qatar, to Bahrain.

Offered for sale on Ebay October 2003.

Stephaie's World of Dolls is pleased to offer this brand new, beautiful, handmade doll which has been directy imported from a tiny island located in he Persian Gulf, Bahrain! Bahrain boarders Saudi Arabia for those who are not too familiar with the Persian Gulf area. This doll is handmade by my personal friend Mrs. Al Murbati and stands 14" tall. Each dolls has a sticker on the base stating, "Souvenir from Bahrain made by Mrs. Al-Murbati and sponsored by Crafts Center. This doll is wearing the traditional dress of Bahraini Men. The traditional Arab dress consists of a brown burlab-like fabric robe with gold trim, over a long white "disa-dash" dress with a high neck collar and reb/white colored arab head-dress with a black rope to hold it in place.Under his "disa-dash" he is wearing white cotten pants and black felt shoes. This doll is made from a combination of wood materials (head, base and torso), cloth (covered head, arms, legs and clothes) and wire (located in the arms)- his arms are slightly poseable. Notice he is carrying golden prayer beads in his hand. This doll would made an excellent conversation piece for your home, or a wonderful addition to your international doll collection as this doll type is extremely rare. Mrs. Al-Murbati is the only person that makes these dolls in Bahrain and she is well know for her craft.

Dolls of the World

I have just begun this page to share information about my own new international doll collection and to organize data about dolls of the world.

Contribute to my page, please. I set out to add a penpal from every country in the world several years ago, just as I am now aiming for a complete survey of dolls from every country. If you have a favorite memory of a souvenir doll please share and I will incorporate your comments under the appropriate country.

To me this is a way to travel the world without leaving home, though in fact it seems to be leading to plans for a trip around the world in my future.
