Summer Celebration Ride

TICKTOCK, TICKTOCK!
Is your clock starting to, sound louder lately? Well, barreling toward us like a locomotive is the adventure trek of 1998 COMING HOME. As we make our last minute preparations for the journey to Milwaukee we keep going over the mental list of what to bring and hope we don't something. As one of the thousands that attended the 10th anniversary and the 90th birthday celebration, I may be able to provide some insight on what to expect. In 1993 the weather was warm during the day and only a little brisk at night. No thermal are needed but be sure to take at least one long sleeve shirt for late night. Sun screen is something to put near the top of your list. The sun may not bear down on you like Florida, but you will get burned if you are not careful. If you are riding, be sure to take a rain suit just in case, a quart of oil, a set of fresh spark plugs and the basic tools. Some us still carry a Georgia Credit Card (siphon hose) for those times when the gas tank decides not to take us that extra mile to the gas station. As for things to do in Milwaukee, there are more vendors than you can imagine selling everything under the sun at the fairgrounds. There are races everyday, motorcycle drill teams and exhibitions. One of favorite things were the service Seminars in one of the meting halls. There you get valuable information on how to maintain your Harley and what makes it tick. There are always a lot of questions asked by the attendees that you have thought of that get answered fight from the most knowable sources. My favorite is the Poker Run though the Wisconsin. Last time on of the stops was the Demo Ride, area where Harley his a wide variety of models currently available that you get to demo. But, the "coup de gras" is the parade on Saturday to the Birthday Party of all Birthday Parties. There is such an outpouring of support and Cheering that no matter how tough you are, you can't help but get teary-eyed. The hospitality extended by the people of Milwaukee is nothing short of wonderful! These are the nicest and most helpful people and the you have to do is ask and they will lend a helping hand with whatever you may need. So get ready for the ride and will see you there.

MDA POKER RUN AND PLEDGE RIDE
Join us on a real blowout, the MDA Poker Run and Pledge Ride on Saturday June 6 at H-D of Atlanta. The first bike goes out at 10 am and the last bike out at noon. The ride will end at the shop with live music, prizes, food and much more. Klements Sausage Co. of Milwaukee has volunteered to supply, cook and serve a wide variety of their fine sausages with all the trimmings. If you were at the May Chapter Meeting you know how good their products are. So come help us on our annual fund-raiser for MDA.

"Here's Looking at You!"
by Mendel Stafford

Have you ever given much thought to the mirrors on you bike. Many things we tend to just take for granite, hopefully our mirrors are not one of them. Mirrors serve many purposes. They look pretty (custom type), they show us how we look (fix our helmet hair, fix our face), a place to hang" our helmet, and last but surly not least, for our safety. Make sure your mirrors are properly adjusted to see the maximum area behind you. There is no particular trick to a proper adjustment because everyone sits his or her saddle differently and the setup of the bike based upon individual preference. Remember to adjust your mirrors as necessary rather that adjusting your neck.

Always check you mirror when pulling out into traffic. A good glance over your shoulder first to make sure traffic is clear then check your mirrors as you pull out into the lane of traffic.

When you are riding in a group your mirrors play another important role. We all know the 2-second rule about following the bike in front of you. Many people ask, "How do you know when you have 2 seconds between you and the other bike. Locate a fixed object on the road (white line) or an object on the side of the road (mile marker, sign, etc.) as the bike in front of you passes that object count to yourself, one thousand - two thousand. Your front tire should not pass the object you selected before you finish counting. If you do, you do not have 2 seconds between you and the other bike. Strangely enough,, if you have that 2 seconds you will be able to look in the mirror of the bike in front of you and see the rider's face. If you cannot see their face they cannot see you. You are too close.

Remember, if you are not safe
................. No One Is!!!
