Dear Chris, I have a gift for you
The poems I give you that I write Much better will you know my heart In these I open it to light So hard for men are tender words And even fathers often grope These words are meant to glimpse my heart To show my dreams and yes, my hope I could not think a better gift Your daddy wrote these all his years Perhaps some use you'll find for them They speak of life, of love and tears My son, you are the best of me The heart that beats within my chest The very air that now I breathe The only thing that I did best I won't be with you all your life I lit your candle with my own One day you'll have a child and wife So short my candle when you're grown And when at last my flame burns out These words are left for you to see To know your daddy better still Through what I write in poetry |
