From the Journal of American Medicine came the disturbing news, in late
April 1998, that adverse drug reactions are the 4th leading cause of death
in the United States.(using 1994 figures.)
Researchers were shocked at the number of deaths between 76,000 and
137,000 caused by drugs. The numbers were even more disconcerting
because cases were excluded by the researchers where drugs were
misprescribed or wrongly used.About 2.2 million serious but nonlethal
drugs reaction occur yearly also in U.S.
Another shocking fact is that adverse drug reactions are rarely
reported.Physicians are asked by the FDA to file reports, but most
doctors are too busy to do this.In 1994 the FDA received only 3,500
fatal drug reaction reports.
