There are many ways to assist persons who have memory loss, including
techniques to aid memory and helpful products, one can purchase or make
at home.Devices and techniques should ofcourse be tailored to suit
the individual.
The home will be more familiar if the furniture and other items are
not rearranged. Small modifications to trigger memory can also be
useful. For example checklists can help a person remember to do
cetain tasks. Homemade labels can also help people to remember the
contents of cabinents, drawers, and closets.
Forgetting every day things like time of day, month ,and year, can be
increasingly frustrating for both patient and caregiver. It's helpful
to display a digital clock and easy to read calendar.Identification
should be carried on the person at all times.
Portable phones are helpful if a person is lost, and needs information
quickly. Small recorders can be pre-recorded with helpful messages.
Timers with memo recorders can be especially useful for a person who
can't recall what he initially set a timer for.
Being a caregiver for someone with Alzhimer's and other forms of
dementia can be very challenging and often frustrating. Here are some things
that caregivers can do to lesson that frustration.Small home
modifications can help trigger memory, but the overall physical
enviornment should stay the same. Maintaining the same daily schedule
of activities can help a person to recognize the pattern of routine
and even anticipate a future activity.
Keeping heavily-traveled areas in the home well-lit, espcially at
night, can help prevent injury. Regular medical check-ups are also
important for those with dementia.
Simplify your speech when talking to a person with dementia. This will
prevent confusion.Cueing a person to what you are doing is also
helpful. For example, a caregiver might say "we are in the kitchen to
make lunch". A caregiver can also cue a person with memory loss when
activities are over. A "wander alert" system can keep a person with
memory loss from wandering away. It constantly tells the caregiver the
location of the person who tends to wander off. Similarly, a "wander
alarm" device goes off when someone leaves a home.
