Chapter   Thirty-Seven

"Come on, Brian, pick up the damn phone," VJ said, quietly to herself. After a few more rings, she slammed the phone down. BJ looked up from the magazine she had.

"What happened between you two, huh?" she asked. "You and Brian were practically inseparable a few days ago."

"I don't know," said VJ. "I was waiting for him at the mall the other day, and I saw Brandon Wilkins...."

"Brandon Wilkins?" asked BJ in disbelief. "You mean the Brandon Wilkins who said he was going to marry a model in high school? That Brandon Wilkins?"

" 'The one and only' as he says," VJ nodded. "He's back in town, looking for some new faces for his modeling agency."

"He owns a modeling agency." BJ shook her head in surprise. "Is he married to a model?"

"No, he said he's not seeing anyone. He said he has yet to find the right model." VJ laughed.

BJ laughed, too. "That guy had such a crush on you back then. Remember those cheesy Valentine's Day gifts he would buy you?"

"How could I forget? Brandon bought me one of those huge Hershey's Kisses and a even bigger card. He was so disappointed when I met that guy in France."

"I remember he was the saddest-looking guy for weeks. But I'm sure he's gotten over it by now. Now, back to you and Brian...."

"BJ, if I knew what was wrong, I would definitely tell you, but I don't. Brian left with no note, no explanation at all."

"Well, there's one way we can find out." BJ grabbed the phone and dialed AJ's number. "Hey, honey, what's up?..... Uh huh..... Uh huh..... Cool. Anyway, I have a reason for calling. Has Brian said anything to you about why he left Orlando a day early?..... Uh huh..... Yeah so..... Are you serious?....." BJ looked at VJ in astonishment. "Thanks, AJ. You've been a very big help..... Okay, I will..... Alright. Bye."

"What happened? What did he say?" VJ asked.

"You didn't tell me that Brandon kissed you," said BJ.

"It was nothing." VJ got up and started pacing. "I was about to leave to see if Brian had gotten to the mall yet 'cause he was a little late. Right when I was about to turn around, Brandon grabbed me and kissed me. I was so surprised, I froze. Then I pushed him away. Brandon knew I was going out with Brian, that's why I was so surprised that he did it."

"You weren't the only one surprised. Brian told AJ that he walked to the food court and saw you and Brandon kissing. Then he turned away and left. He came straight to the apartment, got all his stuff, and told Nick they were leaving. Nick didn't even know what happened until they got back to wherever it is they are."

VJ fell back on the couch. "No wonder he won't answer his phone," she said, with tears in her eyes. "He's afraid it's me calling."

BJ sat scooted over and hugged VJ to her while she cried.

"I was walking to the phones when I saw the rental car. I ran outside and yelled for Brian to stop. He didn't even slow down, he just kept on going," said VJ, her voice shaking. "I ran to my car, drove back here as fast as I could, but all the lights kept turning red on me. By the time I finally got here, Brian and Nick were already heading in the opposite direction. I got inside the apartment and all his things, and Nick's things, were gone."

"I'm sorry, VJ," BJ said, soothingly. "This is the last thing you need with Alisha taking off and not being able to find her. AJ said he tried to get him to call you to get your side of the story, but Brian wouldn't do it. He's standing firm on the belief that you've been cheating on him."

"Have been?" VJ looked at her, curiously. "You mean Brian thinks I've been with some other guy the whole time he's been gone? But that's stupid. I love Brian!"

"That's what AJ tried to tell him, but Brian refuses to listen. AJ did have an idea, though, to get Brian to hear your side of the story."

"What?"

"Send him a letter. Tell every single detail on what happened that day."

"The second he sees my name or my handwriting on the envelope, he'll rip it to pieces."

"AJ already thought of that." BJ looked VJ in the eye. "I'll send to AJ and he'll leave it in Brian's room to find. AJ promised he'll be in the room with Brian to make sure he reads it."

VJ wiped the tears from her eyes. "I'll try anything to get the truth to him."

"Okay, good. You gonna write it right now?"

"Yeah. The sooner Brian get this, the better."

VJ got out a pen some floral stationary to write on and got work to work.

A few days later....

"Let's go back to your room," AJ told Brian.

"Yeah," agreed Nick. "I'll get the Nintendo from my room, and we'll have a tournament."

"All right, cool," said Brian.

The three of them headed to Brian's room. They stopped at Nick's room on the way to get the video games, then walked into Brian's room. Here's the moment of truth, AJ thought.

"Nick, you hook it up," Brian said, as he plopped down on his bed. Brian felt something under him and rolled over to see what it was.

"Where'd this come from?" he said, quietly, when he saw floral stationary with his name on it. He opened it and recognized the handwriting right away. "Okay, how did this get here?"

"How'd what get here?" Nick asked, not bothering to look at Brian, who was holding up the letter.

"It doesn't matter," said Brian, angrily. "I don't even want to look at it."

"Brian, I think you should read it," said AJ.

"Why? Did you leave it here?" Brian looked at him, accusingly.

"As a matter of fact, I did," AJ admitted. "I think you should hear VJ's side of what happened instead of jumping to conclusion that have no basis of existence."

"I don't want to read her lies." Brian was about to rip up the letter when AJ snatched it away from him.

"That's from VJ?" Nick looked at the letter. "Has she said anything about where Ali is?"

"I'm sorry, Nick, but they still can't find her," AJ told him. Nick sat heavily on the bed next to Brian. Then AJ turned to Brian. "Either you read it or I scream out what's in the letter for the whole free world to hear."

"Alright! Alright," Brian gave in. "I'll read it."

It read:

Dear Brian,

I'm sorry about what happened in the mall. It was as much of a surprise that it happened to me, as it was for you to see it. The guy I was with is an old friend from high school. His name is Brandon Wilkins and I hadn't seen him since we graduated a couple years ago.

I was waiting for you at the mall when Brandon showed up. So, we got to talking about what's been going on in each other's lives since we last saw one another. I was about to leave when he kissed me. You have to believe me when I say that I told Brandon about you. He knew I'd been with you for a while and that.... I love you.

I know I've never said that to you before, but I do love you. I love who you are and what we have togther. I would never intentionally do anything to hurt you. You mean so much to me and you've become a big part of my life. It's like, since I found out you saw me and Brandon, I feel like the other half of me is missing. Please, call me. I know we can work this out.

You once told me that I was your angel sent from heaven. I've never forgotten that and if you believe that, we can get passed this. You'd trust that what I'm telling you is the truth. I still believe in our relationship. Nobody can ever change the way I feel about you. I would never cheat on you, even though I know that's what you're thinking. But then if you believe that, you never truly believed in our relationship. Don't let me think that's true.

I Love You,

Victoria

Brian put down the letter. Nick and AJ were looking at him, hoping for a sign that he believed whatever was in the letter.

"I can't," he said, softly. "I can't talk to her. I can't let her continue to pull a curtain over my eyes."

"But what about me? How do I know if they ever find Ali?" Nick said, panicking.

"I didn't say that you couldn't talk to VJ, Nick. I just said I wasn't going to." Brian put the letter in the trash. "How do I know she's telling the truth?"

"Then you're a bigger idiot than I thought you were," said AJ, shaking his head. "I talk to VJ when I got the letter to tell her I had it. She told me what happened that day. You didn't hear her crying over the phone. What reason could she possibly have for lying to you now?"

"Come on, B-Rok," Nick said. "This trust issue is what ruined your guys' relationship before it even got started. Don't let it destroy the love you have."

"I do love her," Brian admitted. "I've been in love with her for a while. I've just never told her. But I'm not ready to forgive her yet."

"Forgive her? She didn't do anything!" AJ shouted.

"Hey! I didn't see her push him away!"

"Probably 'cause you didn't stay long enough to see that part. VJ didn't see you until you were already driving to the exit of the parking lot."

"So she really did push him away?" Brian sat down with his head in his hands. "How could I have been so stupid?"

"Call her," said Nick, handing him his cellphone.

Brian dialed VJ's number. The answering machine picked up. Then Nick and AJ saw a pained-looked on Brian's face. His face was void of any color.

"What's wrong?"

"A guy picked up the phone after the answering machine picked up. 'Brandon Wilkins speaking'. I guess you were wrong, AJ."

AJ looked at the phone. This can't be true. There has to be another explanation, he thought. Then, without another word, AJ walked out of the room.

**Author's Note**
