Chapter   Eight

"Are you sure you want to go up there?" Brian asked.

"I have to do it sooner or later, right?" Raelene pointed out.

"But why not later?" asked Nick.

"You're the one who said I should talk to Todd," Raelene reminded him.

"I know, but I meant like when you went home. When are you going home, anyway?"

"September 2nd I'm flying out to New Mexico. It's a feast day for my tribe."

"How cool. I'd go with you, but school starts that day."

"It's Nicky's first day of eighth grade," said Howie.

"Awww. Our little Nicky's growing up," teased Brian.

"Stop calling me 'Nicky'. I hate it when you guys call me that," Nick complained.

"We're here," Kevin said, loudly.

Kevin parked the van they borrowed and everybody got out. Raelene hestitated a little.

"It's all right. We're with you. We won't let anything happen to you," Brian said, looking down at Rae.

"Okay," she said. Brian grabbed hold of her hand and pulled her forward.

They stepped into the elevator and Rae pushed the button for the 6th floor. Everyone was kind of tense about what was going to happen. The elevator got to the 6th floor and they all stepped off. Rae got her key out of the little backpack she carried around. She opened the door, they all walked in and saw nobody was there. Everyone looked somewhat relieved.

"They left a note," AJ said, walking to an end table.

"What does it say?" asked Brian.

" 'Rae, went to get something to eat. Be back in a couple of hours. Todd and Scott'," read Howie.

"I say we watch TV," said AJ, heading towards the couch.

"Might as well," Rae said. "They'll be back soon. I'll talk to them then."

So they all walked to the couches, got comfortable, and watched MTV.

Todd and Scott were walking down the hall to Scott's hotelroom.

"Do you hear music?" Scott asked.

"Boyz II Men," said Todd.

They walked faster towards the room. When they got closer, they heard it wasn't Boyz II Men singing, but some other group singing "End Of The Road" by Boyz II Men. Scott got out his key and opened the door. Todd and Scott saw Raelene smiling at a young blond guy who was singing to her.

Ralene looked at them and her smile vanished. The guys noticed, stopped singing, turned around, and saw Todd and Scott standing there watching them.

"Hi, Scott," Rae said, walking over to Scott and gave him a hug. Then she looked at Todd.

"Todd," she said.

"Rae," he said back.

"How have you been?"

"In a word. Miserable."

"Oh. Well, I guess I should introduce you to my friends. That's AJ McLean, Kevin Richardson, Brian Littrell, Howie Dorough, and Nick Carter." Rae pointed to each as she said their names.

"Guys, this is my friend, Scott Weinger, and my ex-boyfriend, Todd McKay."

They all moved forward and shook hands, minding their manners and being polite.

"Thanks for letting Rae stay with you, Kevin," said Scott, after everyone sat down.

"No problem," said Kevin.

"Rae, we need to talk," Todd let out.

"Go ahead, it's a free country. Talk," she said, looking at him.

"Alone."

"No. I want Nick, AJ, Kevin, Brian, and Howie here. That's why they are." Nick reached over and took Raelene's hand in his, letting her know that she had his support in this. Todd noticed how tightly Rae was holding onto Nick's hand. He gave Nick an angry look. It didn't faze Nick, he just gave it right back.

"I have no idea why you're mad at Nick. It's not his fault you screwed up," Rae said, angrily.

"That's not fair--" Todd started.

"Not fair?! What wasn't fair was you lying to me!" Rae yelled. "Our relationship was supposed to be based on trust. That was just a big joke to you."

"It's was not," Todd retorted, forgetting everyone, but the girl in front of him. "I know I shouldn't have let what happened happen, but things just got of control. I love you and I would never intentionally hurt you."

"You don't love me. If you did, we'd still be together. You would've been able to resist temptation. You never loved me like that. I believe you love me only as a friend. That's why it was so easy for you to go out on me."

"That's not true. I love you as a person. Rae, you're the most beautiful, intelligent, caring girl I know. You have to believe that."

"I don't know if I can. How do you know if I can trust you?"

"You CAN trust me, Raelene."

"I did that already. Look what happened. I gave you my heart, my soul, my love, and my trust. And you betrayed me."

"What do I have to do to get you to trust me again," Todd pleaded. "Tell me what I have to do."

"Todd, I need some time. To think things through. I came here to do that."

"Yeah, I can see that," he said, sarcastically.

"Don't even try that with me. If you want to stay here, fine with me. I can stay somewhere else."

With that, Rae got up and went to her room to pack, with Nick following close behind.
