I think the funniest one I've heard is from a GABBA show 95' or 96'
can't remember off hand. It's as they come out for an encore Woody say's,
"If you want us to play, you better act like it"! Kills me everytime I
hear it.

During the middle of a show at the HOB in New Orleans, a woman jumped onstage
and preceded toward Woody. She was removed of course. Warren, sporting a large
grin, leaned into the microphone and said (looking at Woody) "He's a magnet!"
Although it is not a Woody-ism, I thought this incident was pretty funny.

amused now that I listen to it again! hehehe ;- )

I have laughed many a time at Woody's comments. A couple of favorites:

I believe it is from the East Lansing, 10/24/95 gig, as he backs into a pole
that is on stage holding the ceiling up while playing (there was one on
Warren's side too). He gets out a wrench or something and hits the pole a
couple of times (as shit fell from the ceiling): "What is this? The
fuckin' pole of love?"

and the obligatory: "That's Matt FUCKIN' Abts"

Anyone have any other funny ones?

this after Warren introduced an encore (World Gone Wild, I think):

"Were gonna play it to drown out the Disco shit next door!"

one of my Woody favorites was from a video trane of a Mule show. I don't
remember the exact show, but this comment followed an intense jam and
goes something like this:

"That pretty much does it for the easy listening portion of our
show............now we're going to rock your monkey ass!"

rock on,

Man this is a funny thread.... This came from a tape i got the day this
thread started

from 9-12-95 right before Left Coast groovies

Warren " ... and we'd like to feature STAIN Matt Abts back here on the
drums"

Woody "Rats ass on the damn drums"

Woody " See, Matt changed his name, kinda like Prince did... only it's not
really a symbol it's kind of a stain - we're not really sure what the stain
is........ but STAIN on the drums"
Warren " so we're just callin him stain"

Woody " what was that stain , Matt??"

Another good one is from 6-7-96

Woody to Matt ---- " you just wait til your shit starts fuckin up !!!!!
(during this show Warren's guitar went out, woody was havin bass troubles, and
the pipes above Woody's head were leaking on him)

                                                                          Don

At my 1st show (1/24/96, Great American Music Hall, SF) I was standing
directly in front of the Woody, and before "Don't Step On The Grass, Sam"
he started playing with the siren on his cop car and said something to the
effect of "This could be you- it's been me!"
Quick sidebar: On the ABB list, they were recently talking about
contemporary music with historic value, and for me, that brings me back
to the aforementioned 1/24/96- I clearly remember standing there during
that show thinking, "My goodness...this must be what it was like to see
 at Fillmore
East/Wharehouse/Ludlows Garage/Fillmore West/wherever." I really could not
believe that I was standing 3 feet from intensely powerful music, let
alone that I was surrounded by only a couple of hundred people!

At the Lexington show this time last year Warren was talking about
"Roseland" and he says you don't have to buy it now, you can record it
from a friend "if you're too cheap" but we're gonna be working on a new
one (Dose) soon.

At that point Allen chimes in; "And you better by *that* Mother fucker."

I always loved that and, of course; "Thanks folks."

Reminds me of something Dickie said at an Allmans gig a couple years
ago, when Where it all Begins was just out. He said something like:
'...here's one from our new album...go out and buy it, or have
someone tape it for ya...'
At that point, every head iin the band turned toward him and they all
glared at him--then everyone cracked up. A great Kodak moment!

So, what are your faves? I still think I hurt from all the laughing,
and I only got through three shows. Someone should be creative and put
some of these to .wav files. They would be download heaven.

Show in October 1995 at Shades (Deerfield, IL) just before the encore:

"Hey! These lights suck." (Apparent reference to the cheap stage lighting)
Other than introducing Warren, only words spoken the entire night.

Hi gang,

Had an extended kicking last Friday night playing through some of the
classic jams that have happened so far on this tour. This goes as far
back as the December run thru the south. Truly unbelievable stuff. But
beyond the music.....................

is Woody's comments to the crowd. Now I've always enjoyed his
commentaries and encouragements to crowds that always end with the
loving expression of "folks"! For example, "ain't that the fuckin shit,
eh folks?". We have all experienced Woody at work in one way or another
and love it all!!

The one that immediately jumps to mind comes from my 9/22/96 tape.

"What's that smell?"

...I'm guessing right after someone up front lit up.

Also...

"Just stand right there. We'll rock the shit out of ya."

-9/5/97

And of course, the palate-cleansing sherbert following the scrumptious,
6-course meal that is Roseland...

"Thank you all. (pause) Goodnight."

Jim K.

P.S. Or how about this exchange:

Warren: "That sounds like Oklahoma, don't it Wood?"

Woody: "Sounds more like Buffalo to me."

P.P.S. I'm joining Don from Chicago in bitchin' for another Windy City
Mule-ing. Can we sneak one in before H.O.R.D.E. rolls into Tinley Park?

I asked Woody about the above "Jam" after the show.

Me: "Woody, was that jam a cover or just a bit of improv?"

Woody: "That was just a lil' sumethin' off of the top of our pointy lil'
heads"

I guess "Jam" it is!!

Subject: in my opinion, the ultimate woodyismHey all,
i was listening to a show (with an interview as filler) i recently
received in the mail and this reminded me of the kick ass things the
Woodmaster says at shoows and stuff.
the main DJ from chicago was being a total dickhead the eniter time. He
was saying stuff like how much he hated the Allman Bro's because his
girlfriend left him for 2 guys in the Allman Bro's back years ago aand
how she was such a whore. He just acted like such an infantile jerkoff
who had no professionalism and respect for the three fine musicians
gracing his studio that day.
He later talks about anticipating Warren and Woody and Matt playing in
the studio and says, " Well, we are about to watch a master at his craft
[ referring to warren] , i dont know about these other two goons
[referring to Woody and Matt]"
I nearly fell out of my chair when Woody replies, "hey man, i used to be
a rock star, I did your girl!!!!!"
Woody is not just a bass player. He is a master musician (along with
Warren and Matt as we all know), and one quick witted devil who knows
how to shut up a jackass of a DJ! This guy cracks me up!
hope y'all enjoyed another Woodyism as much as i did
ps- the 6-27 WBAB festival kicked ass (what else would you expect)pete

From: phil howard Subject: Woodyism?Hi Mulers
Well this isn't exactly a Woodyism - but its related 'cause it is a
quote about our boy.
Thanks to Pete F, I have a copy of Dickey Betts concert @ the Rock &
Roll Hall of Fame (4/14/96). Warren & Woody accompainied Dickey for
this acoustic set.
I never thought of Dickey as a comedian - but here is part of his dry
introduction:
"We're kind of a self-help group up here ----- this is Allen Woody, he
comes from a good family (pause) -- there's no excuse for the way he
turned out." (crowd chuckles & Dickey continues) "No, really, I met
his family - very nice people - (pause) they don't have anyexplanation---"
Was driving to work listening to Dickey as he delivered this --- broke
me up! good thing no one was directly in front of me or I might have
rear-ended 'em.Have a good weekend all.Regards,Phil
