THE McCRACKEN FAMILY GENEALOGY

SAMUEL McCRACKEN Samuel is the oldest ancestor we know of at this time. He lived in Ireland and was an agricultural worker. His date of birth or death is unknown. His wife was Mary McKie who died prior to her son’s wedding in 1855. According to the record of his son’s marriage in 1855, he was still alive at that time. However, it’s unknown whether he was residing in Ireland or Scotland. Samuel and Mary’s only known child was James.

JAMES McCRACKEN James was born in September 1835 in Garvaghy, County Down, Ireland. He apparently immigrated to Scotland as a young man. Since this was the time of the "Great Famine", its possible that was the reason for leaving Ireland. It’s unknown if he immigrated alone or with other members of his family. Since his father was a laborer rather than a landowner, it’s likely they would have been victims of the famine. His occupation in Scotland was a coal miner. He married Ann Ewing 31 December 1855 in Holytown, Bothwell, Lanarkshire, Scotland. They had 8 children: Robert, SAMUEL, James, John, Mathew, Malcome, William, and Mary. All of the children except Robert and Samuel immigrated to Australia. Currently, we have no information on any of the ancestors who immigrated to Australia. Samuel died abt 1897.
