Blaise Pascal
PASCALINE
Pascal invented the Pascaline in 1642.  It was built to help Blaise Pascal's father, Etienne Pascal, in his job of tax collecting.  The Pascaline got much interest and Pascal obtained a privilege (modern day patent) in 1649.  However, the Pascaline was not very popular because it was very expensive and difficult to use.  By 1652, 50 machines were made and less than 15 had been sold.
