Three Three Teens from Australia Leapfrog Their Way to Stardom

The members of silverchair are sick of discussing their age, which is barely 16. Lately, they've been telling the press they're 17 or 18"just to get them off our backs,"says Ben Gillies, the band's drummer. With Chris Joannou and Daniel Johns, this Australian trio has hit the big time. Their album,Frogstomp, has sold a million copies, and their video,"Tomorrow,"airs more often than ads for acne cream.

Winners of an unknown-band contest at age 14, silverchair has been dubbed "Nirvana in Pajamas," and "Soundkindergarten"by critics. But if they do borrow from grunge gods Kurt Cobain and Eddie Vedder, they are maturing fast. Their next album, says Johns, will make people "realize we don't sound like those other bands."

Perhaps. In the meantime, silverchair is working on another project --finishing the 10th grade.
