Mast Mounted Sight

Boeing has developed a unique surveillance system to meet the needs of today's battlefield operations. The Mast Mounted Sight (MMS) is a multisensor, fully integrated electro-optical sighting system with visible and infrared capability. Designed to be mounted above a helicopter's rotor or on a ground combat vehicle, MMS increases survivability through its capacity to identify and target potential threats in day, night, and adverse weather conditions.

MMS uses a combination of a high-resolution television camera, thermal imaging sensors and a laser rangefinder/designator to accomplish its mission. The imaging sensor package provides detection and recognition at night and in inclement weather, while the laser rangefinder/designator achieves precise target designation for laser-guided weapons. Mounted above the rotor of a helicopter, MMS provides natural stealth and extended standoff range by allowing the craft to hide behind existing terrain while maintaining 360-degree surveillance.

MMS offers a solid image through its stabilized sensor system. Known as the "soft mount," the stabilization system isolates the sensors and boresight system from vibration, pitch, yaw and roll motion.

Over 500 units have been purchased by U. S. and international customers, and more than 200 MMS units were deployed in combat during the 1990 Gulf war. The system proved its capabilities, enabling U. S. forces to spot and destroy floating mines, detect and track Silkworm and Exocet missiles, and destroy a Silkworm missile site. MMS was also instrumental in recapturing Kuwaiti territory, taking prisoners of war, destroying Iraqi patrol and attack boats and recovering a downed pilot at sea.

Versatile, dependable and field proven, MMS is a ready asset for combat personnel countering threats anywhere on the globe.
