Bob teaches at Hamlin Middle School in Corpus Christi, Texas. Hamlin is starting on a block schedule plan that includes 4-90 minute classes. This is part of CCISD's overall attempt to improve the local public education system.

The Corpus Christi Independent School System is seeking ways to improve student performance and hold students accountable. One part of their overall effort, Academic Standards, was featured in the USA Today newspaper. The idea behind Academic Standards is that students should be able to demonstrate certain areas of mastery in each subject area in order to progress to the next grade.

Recognizing the need for a sound body as well as a sound mind, Bob coached football and track at the 7th grade level until this year. Thanks to his next door room-mate, James Knoll, Chess coaching has been added to his repertoire. He will be heavily involved with organizing the 1999 Texas State Scholastic Chess Tournament in Corpus Christi, which is why he is not coaching during the 1998-99 School year. He has petitioned the school to allow him to move a cot and a refrigerator into his room, but has received no response so far.
