The manner of function: The PNP transistor initially conducts due to
R1 base bias, which flows current to T1's "secondary" till positive
current through R2 filling C1 and halting base bias, turning off Q1
so that T1 then kicks inductively and finally reverses and begins again.
The ladder network requires a little mental gymanstics to understand,
but basically these are "stacked" capacitors so that the even numbered
ones are filled in the DC diode direction on one AC "primary" stroke
and the odds on the opposing AC stroke from this transformer used in
reverse, with its secondary and primary swapped from its classic use.
This results in high voltage charging of the caps so that "stacked"
as they are, their voltages sum in series, thus the name: A diode-cap
"ladder" voltage "multiplier".
Interesting circuit. Also used for the production of high voltage for
CRT beam drive as well, in televisions and oscilloscopes. This circuit
published only for theoretical interest or lawful defense by a person
