The Outsiders- Characters The Outsiders is kind of like "West Side Story," for those of you who’ve seen the movie. (Pretty good.) There are two social groups. Greasers- tough kids from the east side- and Socs- rich kids from the west side. After getting into a fight with his brother, Ponyboy and Johnny run away. When they encounter a bunch of Socs who almost drown Ponyboy, Johnny kills one of them. They hide in an abandoned church out of town with only one person-Dally- knowing where they are. One of them drops a lighted cigarette, which starts the church on fire. Pony and Johnny go into the burning church to save some kids that are trapped there and are proclaimed heroes. However, Johnny’s injuries are fatal and he doesn’t live very long after that. Dallas takes Johnny’s death pretty hard and soon after dies after being shot by the cops.
It has it’s funny moments, definitely, ("I’d been in church before, I used to go all the time, even after Mom and Dad were gone. Then I talked Soda into coming with Johnny and me. He didn’t want to come unless Steve did, and Two-Bit decided he might as well come too. Dally was sleeping off a hangover and Darry was working. When Johnny and I went, we sat in the back, trying to get something out of the sermon and avoiding the people since we weren’t dressed so sharp most of the time. Nobody seemed to mind, and Johnny and I really liked to go. But that day... well, Soda can’t sit still long enough to enjoy a movie, much less a sermon. It wasn’t long before he and Steve and Two-Bit were throwing paper wads and clowning around, and finally Steve dropped a hymn book with a bang -- accidentally of course. Everyone in the place turned around to look at us, and Johnny and I nearly crawled under the pews. And then Two-Bit waved at them. I hadn’t been to church since.") But it seems real. You just get lost in their world. I cried so much when Johnny died, both in the movie and in the book. The movie isn’t as good, but still captures the sense of the book. My favorite book characters differed from the movie characters slightly. Book, it was Soda and Dallas. Movie, Soda (He was sooo fine!!) and Johnny.
