Every time period there is a chosen one, she is the slayer. A slayer is chosen at birth, and as soon as a slayer dies a new one is chosen. A slayer is sent for a sole purpose, to rid the world of vampires, demons and any other evil beings that try and ruin the human race. It's not an easy job, but it has to be done.

Vampires, such as Dru and Spike, (pictured) originally came to Sunnydale in the early-mid 19th century. One came to destroy the human race, BUT he failed. An unexpected earthquake swallowed the town, including him, but the vampire rath didn't end. The immortal beings teamed with demons, etc. are still after humans.

Buffy, is the new slayer, there can only be one at a time on the Earth. No one knows, not even her mother, except for her "watcher" and closest friends. Giles, is her Watcher, he guides Buffy in her 'vampire attacks', so to speak. Willow, Xander and Cordelia are her friends, the only that know. And her boyfriend, Angel, also knows. Angel is a vampire and even though it is a forbidden rule for a slayer to not kill but love a vampire.
