Titles: jr. lightweight champion 1921-1923 and 1923-1924, featherweight champion 1923-1924 Record: 90-31-19 with 195 No decisions Born: November 22, 1893 in Sciacca, Sicily, Italy Years active: 1910-1932 Nickname: The Scotch Wop Dundee was fearless and would fight anyone although he was almost always the smaller man in the fight as he only 5 ft. 4 inches and reportedly never weighed more than 124 pounds. He was also said to have been the most sportsmanlike person ever to step into the ring during his time. He was a speedy fighter and his trademark move was to rebound of the ropes and come with a punch at the same time. With 321 fights in 20 years he was obviously very willing to fight. His real name was Giuseppe Carrora and took the name Johnny Dundee early in his carer because he manger thought he could make more money for him if it was thought he was Scottish? The people of course easily saw thru this but it was too late as he Dundee had already made a name for himself....literally. For a small man it is incredible that almost all of his fights lasted the distance, he could seldom knock his opponents out and they could not beat him. His footwork and defensive skills were admired by all the fighters of his day. Dundee was taken to America at a young age and got into frequent fights where he was discovered by his manager Scotty Monteith and was 16 when he had his first pro fight. He had no amateur experience and in 1911 alone he made up for that fact by fighting 47 times. Fighting so often kept his skills sharp and 3 years after turning pro he was thought ready to fight for a championship. At the age of 20 he fought the great Johnny Kilbane for twenty rounds only to have the fight declared a controversial draw. He of course fought on and in the next 5 years faced the legendary Benny Leonard 8 times, the 2 classy boxers had all their bouts officially ruled "No Decisions" but most thought Leonard won 5 of the 8 bouts. In 1921 Dundee got his other big shot when he fought George "K.O" Chaney for the junior lightweight title. Dundee won by disqualification in the 5th round of a fight he was dominating. Dundee added the featherweight title when he scored one of his rare K.O's over Danny Frush, Kilbane remembering the first fight with Dundee lost that title for refusing to fight Dundee. For the next 2 years Dundee defended both titles and briefly lost his title to Jack Bernstein but regained it in a rematch. In 1923 he defeated Eugene Criqui to unify the featherweight title. Weight problems caused Dundee to give up the titles and he lost a bid at the jr. lightweight title when Steve Sullivan beat him. Dundee by this time however was passed his prime and the many bouts had caught up with him. He lost 9 of his next 11 fights, including one last title shot when he starved himself down to the featherweight limit only to loose to Tony Canzoneri. Still he fought on until he was 41 years old never again getting a title shot and lost most of his ring earnings in a failed business.
