December

At the end of the year, most Japanese are so busy with shopping for year-end gifts, making Christmas and New Year's food, going to end-of-the year parties, cleaning the house, writing New Year's cards, and so on. After finishing these chores, we bring in the New Year watching Red and White Song Contest on TV, hearing the 108 peals of the temple bell, eating buckwheat noodles, and so forth on New Year's Eve.
I would like to show you some of these traditions, which put us in a special mood in Japan. When the year is over, it seems to have flown by.

Christmas' decorations
From the beginning of December the streets at the day and night are filled with shop decorations and music to sell many kinds of goods for Christmas. These days we often see illuminated Christmas decorations increasing around the city and houses. I found this interesting shop decoration and took a picture of it. This photograph, which shows some Santa Clauses climbing up the wall of a department store, was taken in front of Hachioji Station in west Tokyo.
Tokyo Millenario
Tokyo Millenario, which means festival of the millennium, has an illuminated gallery about 10 meters high and is a few hundred meters in length. It was set up in front of Tokyo Station at the end of December,1999. Many people in the gallery might be impressed when under this "ray of hope."

Ameyoko Shopping Street
Ameyoko Shopping Street, which is located between Ueno Station and Okachimachi Station, was crowded with people going shopping for New Year's food. The street is known well all over Japan as a shopping street where we can get them cheap.
Red and White Song Contest
The Red and White Song Contest on New Year's Eve has been going on for a long time. Although the best annual song of each singer should be judged properly speaking, exceedingly eccentric costumes recently have showed a more fashionable tendency. This photograph shows one of these gorgeous costume.

108 peals of the temple bell
Hearing the temple bells peal, some people believe that the bells might release them from the 108 earthy desires.
When the old year is coming to a end, everybody hope the next year will bring good fortune to everyone.
