George Moran's nickname was "Bugs." He was born in 1893 to Irish and Polish immigrant parents. He grew up in Chicago and was in many gangs. He committed more than 20 known burglaries and imprisoned three times before he was 21. He was a member of the "North Siders" gang. Moran became leader of the "North Siders" after O'Banion and Weiss were killed by Capone hit men.
Moran was the lead car in the drive past Capone's Cicero headquarters at "The Hawthorn Inn." There were over 1,000 shots into the building.
Moran hated Capone and often called him "The Beast." Capone came close to getting Moran at the St.Valentine's Day Massacre. Moran was late arriving that day, he was very lucky. Moran eventually moved to away and was arrested July, 1946. He was arrested for robbing a bank messenger of $10,000. He was sentenced 10 years. After he was released, he was arrested again. He was arrested for an earlier bank raid and sentenced for another 10 years at Lavenworth.
Moran died of cancer in 1957. Moran was given a paupers burial in a wooden casket in a potters field just outside the prison he was in.
