BEFORE I WAS BORN
1. My mother was pregnant.
She went to a few hospitals to find out whether it was a son or a daughter.
All of the doctors said it was a daughter.
She aborted it.
After killing it, the nurse found it was a son and told my mother.0-7 YEARS OLD.
2. My brother urged me to play with him.
He blindfolded me with a cloth and tied my hands behind and made me fall forward.
A front tooth was bumped against the floor of the room.
My face and the floor were covered with blood.
The moment I was about to cry, he covered my mouth with his hand.
Parents were in our own vegetable field beside the house. They heard me crying and came to me.
All they did was to get rid of the blood.
They didn't scold him at all or take me to a dentist.
(But I thank my parents for it now. If they had done it, the Korean dentist would have pulled it out.)
I have had a prominent front tooth and none of my family has asked me about it since then.3. I don't know whether my parents did it or not, but in Korea, people used urine and excrements as a fertilizer for their vegetable fields.
4. Parents often boiled meat and it smelt disgusting.
Sometimes they killed animals at home.
One day I saw a rabbit they bought.
It was cute and I wanted to touch it.
Parents didn't allow it and killed and ate it.
When they recommended meat for me and just smelling it made me sick and I refused it, they said, "Other children like meat very much. You are a fool."
They were Buddhists. A Buddhist is forbidded to eat meat.5. Brother covered my head by force with a blanket, choked me for a while and let me breathe for a while. He repeated it.
6. The towel smelt bad.
I wanted to wipe my face with a clean towel after washing it.
Brother and sisters had their own.
I said to mother, "I want to have my own towel."
It was not allowed.
I sometimes got a sty in my eye.
Father heated the lid of his lighter and put it on the sty.
They said it was a treatment.7. There was a little boy and his sister, who were very poor and lived near my house.
I became close to them.
One evening I promised that I would give them candies after dinner.
After dinner, I was about to get out of my house with candies in my pocket.
Mother and brother said, "You are always trying to play with children like a beggar. This fool. Idiot."
She said, "You must not get out. If you get out, I will beat you to death."8. Mother usually wound a thread on my baby tooth and pulled it out.
When she was doing it one day I saw some blood vessels coming out, which were attached to the tooth and stained with blood.
It was painful.
I think I have had no tooth in the place since then.9. Mother and third sister told me that I should throw away the upper teeth on the roof and the lower teeth on the ground.
Superstition.10. Brother put a chick into a vacant matchbox.
He put the box on the hot floor of the room (It was winter), and covered it with a blanket.
It died painfully.
