At the elementary level, he learned the rudiments of guitar playing from a talented older couple; he played drums in every school choir show for a terrific music teacher; and a wise language teacher allowed him to express himself on paper without fear of breaking rules. At age nine, he played drums for a high school youth musical at church; then drummed and sang in Lois Long's Young Musicians.
Acceptance to Nashville's Belmont College was the final step to a career in music. Performing in Bob Mulloy's super group, The Belmont Reasons, and participating in numerous senior projects provided all kinds of good experience. A summer session with a Tennessee rock band, Smash Getaway, gave him a taste of lifeon the road not, all that glamorous, but fun. Then came a summer with Opryland's 5080's show which was a lesson in professional musicianship, on time, on your toes, and make it fun with the audience. All this led to the Varsities, the show group which would eventually become Little Texas.
