Porter's interest in songwriting became apparent when Bad Habit first started actually performing. The shows were free, but the group was able to get bookings, and they were a very popular high school group. The band was composed of several friends whose main musical interest was hard rock. Songwriting became really important because they wanted the freedom of expressing their own ideas. As their success continued and as Porter started to branch out with several different groups, his parents more and more that he was determined to live in the world of music, even at risk of being very broke for a very long time!
