LUCKY AND LIZ - IN LUCKY'S BOXCAR ON JUNE 26, 1998

In Lucky's boxcar sitting down. Elizabeth is painting a picture and Lucky is watching her.

E: I can feel you staring at me, it's like you are burning two perfect hot little holes in my side.

L: I was trying to figure out what you're painting.

E: You'll just have to wait and see. {She starts to paint again and a drop of red paint slowly falls down her page and she looks up and starts to think about the rape. She has a haunted look on her face and Lucky looks up and sees it}

L: Hey, stop it. {Elizabeth, startled, looks at him}

E: So, what do you think? {She holds up her painting}

L: It's cool, yeah, a lot of action.

E: Good then this can be your first one you watch on your TV, as long as you have one you might as well use it.

L: Thanks. It was kinda getting boring watching a blank screen.

E: And when you get tired of it you can change the channel. Anything else you want? MTV? A baseball game?

L: Surprise me. After you tell me what you're avoiding.

E: I'm not

L: Not that I mind. Anytime you want to hide out and paint pictures for my television. I could use some furniture while you're at it too.

E: I just didn't feel like going to school today.

L: Elizabeth, don't even try it. You know the grades for Murty's final came out this morning.

E: I just felt like sitting here instead of going to school and finding out I flunked in front of the entire class. I notice you're not jumping in to tell me I'm wrong.

L: I checked your student ID number, you blew the test.

E: I was too busy setting up Murty to pay attention to the test. You know, I really thought we'd catch him that night. I thought we'd prove he raped me and then I wouldn't have to worry about my grade. You know sometimes it just makes me want to scream that I have to worry about what grade my rapist gives me in english.

NEXT SCENE

{They are sitting eating pizza and Elizabeth is picking off the olives}

L: I thought you wanted olives.

E: They're okay. There's another reason why I didn't go to school today. They know, don't they?

L: No.

E: You heard Nikolas at the Nurses Ball. He said he didn't care what your little girl friend had been through. He was talking about the rape. And obviously he told Emily or why else would she say that thing about the Webber girls throwing themselves at all the guys?

L: Listen, Emily was mad that you insulted prince Nikolas. She just said the first thing that came into her head. She doesn't know, it sounded like it, but she doesn't.

E: You can't be sure!

L: Emily is not cruel. Believe me, if she knew something had happened to you she never would have said anything like that.

E: Well, Nikolas knows.

L: Okay look, he maybe figured it out when he saw you coming out of the support group, but that was months ago. The Nurses Ball was the first time he said anything.

E: That we know of.

L: He has no friends. There's no one he could tell that would be interested. Even if the whole town knew why should you be ashamed? You didn't do anything wrong, the wrong was done to you.

E: Oh yeah right, I was raped. And that's all I'll ever be is the girl who was raped. I'm the one they'll stare at, I'm the one they'll whisper about. I didn't do anything wrong but I'm the one who has to pay. That pig used me and he walked away like nothing had happened. And no matter what I do or how hard I try to leave it behind me, I will always be stuck there, trapped in that night in those bushes. And no matter how hard I fight, I will never get away.

{Elizabeth sighs and puts her head down and Lucky gently reaches over and takes her hand and she looks up slowly at him}

NEXT SCENE

{Elizabeth is crying and Lucky is watching}

L: You okay?

E: Sometimes it's good to cry, it releases some of the pressure. I'm just sorry you had to watch.

L: There's nothing to be sorry about. Elizabeth no one knows you were raped, except the people you told and Nikolas, but I'll make sure that he doesn't tell anyone else okay?

E: I don't want you to fight with your brother because of me.

L: Nikolas isn't my brother, he's my mother's other son. And I hated him long before this happened to you. We're not going to fight, I'm just going to tell the prince how it isand he's going to listen to me.

E: Sounds like a fight to me.

L: It's not, trust me.

E: I've never trusted anyone more in my life. But's it's not enough, I need to do something, Lucky. I need to find the next step the one that will get me past this.

THE PART OF THE SONG PLAYING WHEN LIZ AND LUCKY ARE ON

And I'd give up forever to touch you Cause I know that you feel me somehow You're the closest to heaven that I'll ever be And I don't want to go home right now And all I can taste is this moment And all I can breathe is your life
