Library Flashs.

• 12/30/02 - The Jewish Community Library of Los Angeles (JCLLA) with a site at www.jclla.org/ moves into a new location. The story was in the 12/20/02 issue, page 13, of the Jewish Journal and at www.jewishjournal.com/home/preview.php?id=9816.
• 7/27/02 - Send the LAPL to jail. Cause, per their "Library Events July - August 2002" booklet, the L.A. Public (City) Library has closed ten of their 20 branches in the San Fernando Valley for 'construcction.' OK, so they did open three temporary branches. A library employee said these closures typically last for two years. Send the LAPL to jail, and good luck finding an open branch.
• 7/23.1/02 - For the San Fernando Vally - L.A. County only has a few branches - good Luck. L.A. City has several branches, but many are closed for remodeling - also good luck.
• 7/23/02 - Burbank Public Library at www.burbank.lib.ca.us has a central outlet and two branches with shorter hours, like closed on Sunday. Central hours were:
  • Monday - Thursday 9:30 am to 9:00 pm
  • Friday 9:30 am to 6:00 pm
  • Saturday 10:00 am to 6:00 pm
  • Sunday 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm
• 2/19/00 - The L.A. County library has an AMNESTY program that allows overdue items to be returned for free. Other fees still apply. Good till March 5 2000. The last amnesty was in 1986. They got items valued at over $1,000,000 and only lost $25,000 in fines. Sounds like a good plan. The most overdue item was 23 years. From 2/17/00 Beach Reporter.
• 9/23.1/99 - The Los Angeles County library in Carson will be open on Sunday, starting 10/3/99 between 1 and 5 p.m. The L.A. City library in San Pedro has been open on Sunday for quite a while. Torrance has closed their libraries on Sunday for a while.
• 9/23/99 - At first it looked like the County of Los Angeles Public Library had its own newspaper called BookPage, about new book releases. Now it looks like they just had their name printed on the front and bought an ad on the back cover. Web site at www.bookpage.com.
• 3/9/99 - Yesteday's Daily Breeze newspaper on page A2 carried this headline: "Los Angeles - East Asian Library will be dedicated March 18" from the City News Service. The story can be condensed to: USC, under one roof, major research center, Korean Heritage Library and important Chinese and Japanese collections, and 1600 volumes of ancient forms of Chinese characters, etc.

Libraries. The initial numbers are from "Get Up and GO! 1999 Resource Directory" which may be available at your local library - 9/23/99. See westport.thomas.com/ for maps of all the libraries. Follow along thru "Online Maps," etc. It's a long list, and you have to know the exact name of each branch; or do a fine for the city, ZIP, key word, etc.

Los Angeles has two major library organizations. There will be a test. I get them confused so I call them the "city" and the "county" library.

• City - The Los Angeles Public Library (LAPL) has the big central library downtown, eight large regional libraries, and 67 branch libraries. Their web site is www.lapl.org.
• County - The other big group is the County of Los Angeles Public Library which has five major regional libraries and 80 other branches. Their new web site is www.colapublib.org/ (was www.colapl.org). The old site did list many other local libraries and gives the address, hours, etc.

Many towns and colleges also have their own libraries. Many libraries provide not only books but also newspapers, magazines, video tapes, audio CD's and tapes, tax forms, computers, and tons of other stuff. When you need anything, it pays to check with them first
