Janis Joplin
"In this world, if you read the papers darlin', you know everybody's fightin', oh, with each other. There ain't no one you can count on, not even your own brother. So if someone should come along, he gonna give you some love and affection, I'd say get it while you can, Honey get it while you can. Don't you turn your back on love..."

~from "Get It While You Can"

She may be gone, but the soul-fed sound and legend of Janis Joplin will live on forever (At least in the heart of this hippie child) So, hey, man, don't turn your back on a chance to own a piece of musical history -- get it while you can!

Sandy Denny
What Is True?
by Sandy Denny

Silver tongues all speaking long and tired into the night,
I must be myself and I'll do alright.
Oh, please, my darling, do not make me sad,
Late at night nobody really wants to feel that bad.

The rain beats so impatiently upon the window pane,
I must close my ears or I'll go insane.
Can't you be a gentle breeze or as silent as the snowfall?
Won't you even try and listen for the voice behind the wall?

It cries to you
Even though it only ever whispers
Part of what it knows,
And it's never ventured
Through the locks
Where the brazen river flows
It's the fingerprint
Which is never made,
It's the perfume of a rose.

And it is there if you are searching, but the moment must be right
As the night is black, as the day is white
Please, please, my friend help me to be glad
Help me find the one and only thing I've never had.

What is true
Even though it only ever whispers
Part of what it knows
And it's never ventured
Through the locks
Where the brazen river flows.
It's the fingerprint
Which is never made,
It's the perfume of a rose.

Sandy recorded this at home in 1974, four years before her untimely death.(For a complete biography, click on "Browse Albums" above)It's just one of a long list of beautiful, haunting songs that she composed, and which I never tire of listening to. Sandy's voice was magic -- and when put to her profound and often poignant lyrics, the result was nothing short of astonishing. And it's captured here at CDnow on several different CDs. So, if this is the first time you've heard the name Sandy Denny, or if you hold the spirit and music of her in a special place in your heart like I do, now's your chance to expand your music library and your perspective.

Who Knows Where The Time Goes

Richard Thompson
Okay, let's enter the land of the living.

Only getting better with every passing year, Richard Thompson is someone I only discovered a short while ago, but he's been around, pouring his heart into every note, for years. He too, is rooted in England and has played with Fairport. His rich, colorful voice lends itself well to soulful ballads, intense, punchy tunes and everything in between. If you're a Sessions At West 54th Street watcher, you may have been lucky enough to catch the show featuring him last fall. (Don't see this guy on TV much)Or, you may have heard one of his songs here or there, performed by one of the growing number of people who are tuning into this masterful songwriter, singer and guitarist. Here's a tidbit of his talent:

"It's a desperate game we play
Throw our souls, our lives away
Wounds that can't be mended
And debts that can't be paid
O I played and I got stung
Now I'm biting back my tongue
And I'm sweeping out the footprints
Where I strayed"
~from "Keep Your Distance", track 11 on Rumor & Sigh, copyright 1991, Capitol Records

Tom Petty
So he sounds like the Byrds. So he's not your drop-dead gorgeous, guitar-totin' hunk. So he may not be who most people think of when they call to mind the all-time greatest muscians of this century. His fans (yes, that includes yours truly) still love his music. If you're among them, then I'm sure you'd love a chance to snag his latest CD -- here it is!
