Oh! I am so sorry! I was getting the stories ready to go into the page builder, and I looked at my page. Then, and only then, did I realize that I goofed - big! Laura and Caroline have written 6 fanfic stories (that I have record of) and those were the first that started off the page. Today, on 11-17, I realized that I had posted stories 1,3,4,5,6. And no one said anything! So, to all the people that read the first one, than read the third, and found themselves confused - try this one. It might fix everything! Theresa
This is the sequel to my first fanfiction, "Just Like Starting Over." Thanks to everyone that responded with ideas and comments. It looks like I ticked off the entire population of ER fanfiction readers by making Doug visit Anna! Sorry, it just seems to me that something close to that will happen next season! Please respond to this, I love your comments, positive and negative!
ACT 1 SCENE 1 (Doug is sitting at a counter in Anna's motel kitchenette). Anna You look tired. (Doug does not respond, he is staring into space). Anna You want something to drink? (She looks at him curiously) Doug? Doug (snaps his head up) Oh, uh, sure...coffee? Anna (smiles and goes to look for it) I'm all out. Hot chocolate? I have marshmallows. Doug Great. Anna (puts cup in the microwave) So what's going on? Doug (looks at her) Nothing. Anna I mean, why are you here? Doug (evasively) To entertain you. Anna Mmm...sounds interesting. How do I repay you? Doug (misses her hinting) Cash, check or charge. Anna Hey Doug? Doug Yep? (Drinks from the mug). Anna I was out of line the other day, you know with Chuck Martinez, the kid with the hip pain? I ordered all those tests... Doug It's no big deal- Anna Yeah, it is. I just wanted to show you I knew what I was doing. (She looks helpless). Doug (softly) Hey, it's ok. (They look at each other. Anna leans forward and kisses him on the lips. Neither pulls away, but Doug doesn't respond at first. When they begin to kiss more deeply, Doug suddenly pulls back). Doug I can't do this. (He shakes his head and his expression changes) I don't want to do this. Anna Sorry. (She smiles and sighs) I didn't mean to push you. I feel so stupid. Doug I'm sorry. You're...really great but I'm...well I finally have a chance to be with someone I really care about. I'm not going to let anything come between us. Not this time. Anna (smiling and nodding) Maybe you should go. Doug Yeah. (They get up and walk to the door). Anna Goodnight. Doug 'Night. (He leaves. Anna shuts the door and leans against it, folding her arms). (Show Doug walk from Anna's motel door to his car. We see him pull up in the hospital parking lot and go through the ER doors). Chuny What are you doing here so late? Doug Hey Chuny...is Carol on? Chuny Nope. (checking the schedule) She'll be here at 8:00. Doug Will you wake me up at 8:00 then? I'm going to bed. Chuny Sure. Kerry Hey Doug, what are you doing here? Doug I can't bear to be apart from you guys. (He walks toward a Trauma Room). Doug (yawning) Goodnight. END SCENE 1 SCENE 2 (Cut to show paramedics rolling a middle aged man on a gurney into the ER. It is early morning). Paramedic I need some help here! Doyle What've you got? (Carter trails behind Doyle, listening). Paramedic 46 year-old man from Grant Park shot after he was mugged by some teenagers. Applied a tourniquet to his shin- Carter (with pretend exasperation) You're supposed to write the time you applied it on his forehead! Doyle (snickers) You saw that emergency training video, too? Carter (nods) Paramedic Applied 18 minutes ago. Doyle We should be able to salvage the limb then. (They enter Trauma 3) On my count...one, two, three! (they move the man from the gurney, and Doyle listens to his heart with a stethoscope). Lydia BP is 180 over 115. Doyle CBC, chem 7, stat! Carter Possible fracture to tibia, excessive blood loss. Doyle Cut down tray, please! (bends over to inspect shin) Call surgery, they're gonna have to remove that (points to bullet). Lydia BP is dropping. Carter Give me six milligrams saline IV push. Right Maggie? Doyle (nods absently). Carter Maggie? Doyle (snaps out of it) Uh...six milligrams IV saline. Carter (curious) That's what I just said... Doyle Oh...yeah. Good work, John. Lydia Heart rate stable. Carter Good. (Edson arrives with Anspaugh). Edson We'll take over from here. (Anspaugh, Edson, and RN roll the patient out. Doyle and Carter peel off their gloves and leave the trauma together). Carter So what's going on? Doyle Huh? Carter You kinda lost it there in trauma. Doyle Yeah, well, I've got some stuff on my mind- Carter If you wanna talk, I'm here, ok? Doyle (smiles) We have work to do. (Camera closes on them walking down the hall). END SCENE 2 SCENE 3 (Cut to show Benton and Carla leaning over their baby's incubator in the NICU. They are leafing through a baby name book). Benton So what do you think about William Gene? Carla (laughs) Do you want him to get beat up at school? Benton (hurt) There's nothing wrong with that name. Carla I was thinking more along the lines of Daryl Stuart? Benton (makes a face) Umm...no. Carla George Christian? Benton No. George means "farmer"! Benton How about Kenneth Peter? Carla No! That's terrible. Benton What about David? Carla I like that...what does it mean? Benton (reading from book) "Beloved." Carla (smiling) How about David Andrew? Benton (putting an arm around her waist) I like that. (Close on the couple). END SCENE 3 END ACT 1 ACT 2 SCENE 1 (Show Carol Hathaway open the door of the Trauma Room where Doug is sleeping. He is lying on a rumpled bed, sheets thrown to the floor. He is still wearing his shoes, and is cuddled up in the fetal position. Carol moves closer, smiling, and takes off his shoes. She picks up his blankets and tucks them under his chin. She leans over and kisses him on the forehead. Doug yawns, stretches and opens his eyes slowly). Doug Mmm...what're you doing? Carol Good morning to you, too. Doug (turning around and burying his head in his pillow) I'm tired. Go away. Carol It's 8:00! Doug (glancing at his watch) Already? Geez...(rubbing eyes, he sits up) I went past your house last night. Carol (uncomfortable) Oh. Doug So I guess Toby did get to come inside... Carol Doug, I...(she looks upset). Doug Oh, its not like I'm mad or anything...after all, I was at Anna's last night. Carol (is taken aback) Yeah? Doug Uh-huh. She's really great- Carol (quickly) I don't want to know the details. Doug I was going to say she's great at making cocoa, but you can imagine whatever you want. (looks her in the eyes) We didn't do anything. I didn't want to. Carol Oh. (she trusts him, finally). Doug I wanted to tell you, I changed my mind about that "seeing other people thing." Carol (looks at him) (abruptly) I slept with Toby last night. Doug (looks a little hurt) I guess you do want to see other people, then. (he sighs and flops back down on the bed). Carol Doug, it's not what you think. Doug (skeptical) Then what is it? Carol It didn't mean anything, Doug. I was just trying to prove to myself that I didn't need you anymore. (she pauses) I was wrong. (She bends over and kisses him on the lips. Doug runs his hands through her hair and then gently breaks away). Doug (gruffly) Com 'ere, you. (He grabs her by the waist and drags her onto the bed with him. She socks him in the stomach playfully. Close on them hugging and laughing.) END SCENE 1 SCENE 2 (Cut to show Jeannie leaning over the front desk, looking upset. Kerry Weaver approaches). Kerry Hi Jeannie... Jeannie (bites her lip and grabs a patient file. She doesn't respond to Kerry) Kerry What's wrong? Jeannie (surprised when she notices Kerry) It's Al. Kerry What happened? Jeannie He was having some trouble with his meds...(she pauses for breath) So I got him into this group study. I thought maybe it would help him. Kerry I don't understand. Jeannie The new medication had an adverse effect on him, his viral lode is almost doubled. Kerry (worried) Oh my God. Jeannie Greg thinks we'll have to send him into the hospital soon if his numbers keep climbing...(she lets out a little sob) Why did I do this to him? Kerry (she puts her arm around her shoulders comfortingly) It's not your fault, Jeannie. You were just trying to help. Jeannie I shouldn't have involved myself with this. Kerry There is no way you could've known. (Kerry backs away slightly) You were just trying to help him. That's all that matters. Jeannie (looks up) Thanks, Kerry. (pauses) You've always been there for me. Kerry You're welcome, Jeannie. (Kerry moves away, close on Jeannie). END SCENE 2 SCENE 3 (Cut to show Mark sitting in a comfortable office. An older, slightly balding man is sitting behind a large, oak desk). Mark So...where should we start? Crawford Well, from what I understand, you were attacked in your hospital bathroom and have been paranoid ever since. Mark (grinning) That sounds about right. Crawford Just what are you afraid of exactly? Mark I don't know...I guess just of having it happen again. Crawford You assume that because of this one attack, that the whole world is out to get you? Mark Sort of. It's like a wake up call. I had this happy life and now...I don't feel safe anymore. Crawford What have you done to fight against this feeling? Mark I bought a gun (continues) but I threw it in a lake. Crawford Why? Mark A few nights ago, I was on the subway. Some kids were harassing me, they wanted money...so I pulled a gun on them. Crawford And why did you throw the gun in the lake? Mark I don't know. That's why I'm here... Crawford (smiles) I'm glad that you decided to come after all. (Fade to black). END SCENE 3 END ACT 2 ACT 3 SCENE 1 (Doug and Carol walk together past the front desk, they stop and Doug drops off a chart). Carol So are you gonna ask me out for tonight? Doug (smirks) I'd love to, but I'm taking Mike out. Carol You know, I'm beginning to be jealous of this kid... Doug (smiles, and kisses her briefly) Thats the point. I'll call you tonight. Carol (nods) Bye (she leaves). (Jerry interrupts Doug's watching Carol go down the hall). Jerry Dr. Ross, there's some kid waiting for you in the lounge. His name's Michael Ryan? Doug Oh yeah...his mom with him? I wanted to check what time he's supposed to be back. Jerry No. She said she had to get back to work. I had a horrible time who she meant by "Doug." Apparently the service didn't tell her your last name. Doug (glancing at chart on the front desk) Yeah, they never do...I'm off in two, can you have Mark cover for me until then? (grins) Jerry Yeah. (Show Doug head to lounge. A boy, age 11, is waiting there, lying on the couch). Doug Hey, Mike. Mike (sitting up) Hi. Doug (glances at watch) We better go if you want to make it to the game on time. Mike Game? Doug Yeah, I got tickets to the Bulls for us. Mike Cool! Thanks, Doug! Doug Let's go, kiddo. (Pats him on the back) (They leave the lounge and climb into Doug's car). END SCENE 1 SCENE 2 (Beginning to grow a little dark outside. Show interior of Carter's apartment building. Maggie Doyle is walking up the stairs, charts in hand. Her eyes are red-rimmed). (Show a rumpled Carter lounging in a chair, reviewing the patient files that cover his kitchen table). (There is a knock on the door). (He looks at the door in surpise and gets up to answer it). (He opens the door). Carter (even more surprised) Maggie? Doyle I'm just dropping of these charts. Carter Great. Like I don't have enough to do already. (He looks at the other charts on the table, annoyed. He notices her tearstained cheeks). Something wrong? Doyle You've got a lot to do, it's no big deal. (She bites her lip to keep from crying) Carter (lying) It's nothing that can't be put off. (pauses) Come in. (She follows him inside). Doyle (whistles when she notices the mess) Was there a hurricane? Or is your maid on vacation, pretty boy? Carter (grins sheepishly, picking up two pairs of boxers off the carpet. He takes her coat and throws it on a chair) You're so hard on me. Doyle You wear boxers? I woulda thought you were the briefs kinda guy. Carter You never had the chance to find out. (They grin at each other. Doyle looks better, but something is obviously bothering her. Carter motions toward the couch, and they sit on opposite ends of it, in front of the television). Carter So tell me what's on your mind. You've been weird all day. Doyle (swallows) Well...Erin left me. Carter Ouch. I thought you guys were getting along really well. Doyle So did I. (sighs) Do you know what it's like? You finally find someone you really want to be with, and they don't feel anything for you... Carter (looks startled, and then directly at her, wondering if she knows) Not really. Doyle And no matter what you do or say, you can't change anything. Carter It was that way with me and Abby. I needed her more than she needed me. She made that pretty clear... Doyle Women suck. Carter I'll drink to that. (He opens a beer and hands it to her. They drink). Doyle (between gulps) C'mon, I'm baring my soul here. Give me some dirt on you. Carter (grins at her) There isn't any. (Fade to black). END SCENE 2 SCENE 3 (Cut to show Mark enter the lounge. He is startled to see Nina sitting on the couch, drinking a glass of Coke). Nina Hey, Mark. Mark Hello. (pauses) Why are you down here? Nina I have a meeting with Weaver on a mutual patient. Mark Hmm... Nina So how have you been? Mark Good...I went to Dr. Crawford this morning. Nina (smiles) I'm glad. I'm sorry about that little falling out we had. Mark It's ok. Nina It's just that whenever someone I care about...is having trouble...I try to take over and help them out. It's my way of dealing with it. (Mark smiles). Nina Tell me if I bug you, I don't mean to or anything. Mark It's ok, Nina. (pauses) So are you busy tomorrow? Nina No... Mark Maybe we could have dinner-without kids this time? Nina That sounds great. Mark I'll pick you up at 7:00? Nina Sure. (Mark grins and exits. Fade to black). END SCENE 3 END ACT 3 ACT 4 SCENE 1 (Doyle is putting on her coat at John's apartment). Doyle Thanks for putting up with me, I just needed to talk. (Carter nods). Doyle (looks upset again) And now I'll just go back to my empty apartment and think about her all night. (She rolls her eyes and tears drop down her cheek). Carter (softly) Hey... (He leans forward to hug her and she puts her arms around his neck. She is crying silently. John has a faraway look in his eyes and he runs his hand over her back). (They back off and he sees the tears on her face. He gently puts his thumb on her cheek and wipes them away. Her eyes widen and he leans forward and kisses her mouth. Maggie is hesitant, but only at first. They open their mouths and the kiss becomes more passionate). (Fade to black). END SCENE 1 SCENE 2 (Cut to show a paramedic wheeling a young black male into the ER. It is night). Paramedic 32 year-old male with HIV, severe cut on his right hand. Looks like it went pretty deep. Kerry (glances at the patient with instant recognition) Get Jeannie! Now! What's open? Randi Trauma 6. Kerry Ok. On my count...one, two, three. (glances at cut closely) Let's get a surgeon down here! (They enter Trauma 6). Malik BP is 155 over 110. (Edson enters). Edson You paged me? Kerry Yeah, 32 year-old male with HIV, gash on his right hand. Stitch him up and page me if there's any problem. (She moves toward the door). Edson There's a problem already. I'm not sewing him up. Kerry There is no risk of contracting HIV. We practice universal precautions. Edson I'm not doing this. (Kerry sighs, frustrated). (Jeannie enters). Jeannie What's the...oh my God, Al! (Close on Jeannie's expression). END SCENE 2 SCENE 3 (Cut to show Doug and Michael driving home in Doug's car, late at night. Michael is a mess, he has mustard on his lip, and his fingers are greasy from the corn dog he's devouring). Doug Careful, I don't want you to get sick. Mike (bragging) I never get sick. Doug Yeah, well I bet you've never eaten 3 Cokes, 2 Twinkies, a Hershey bar, and 2 corn dogs in a matter of hours before. Mike (grinning) My mom never lets me eat junk food. Doug So this'll be our little secret. Mike Ok. Doug But make sure you wipe that mustard off your lip, or your cover will be blown. (pauses) It's ok that your mom doesn't let you eat junk, it just means that she cares about you. Mike Yeah, my dad sure didn't. I never met him, my mom says he was a real jerk. She got married to some guy a year after I was born, but they got divorced when I was three. So I never really had a father, my mom won't even tell me his name. Doug Well, I know how that feels. I didn't really have a father either. (They near Mike's house). Mike So can you visit again soon? Doug Next Saturday at 12 ok? Mike That's cool. (They stop in front of his house and Doug follows him up the steps to the lighted porch). Mike This was fun! Doug You bet, buddy. See you! (Mike knocks on the door. A pretty redhead answers it. Mike grins at Doug and hops inside). (The woman smiles at Doug and sticks out her hand. The smile fades when she takes a step forward. Doug is taken aback). Doug (shocked) Lisa? Lisa It can't be...Doug... Doug (steps backward) So he's my... Lisa nods. Doug ...son... Close on Doug's expression. END SCENE 3 SCENE 4 (Cut to show Carter's bedroom. Pan up from the bottom of the bed. John is sleeping with his arm around Maggie. He is smiling in his sleep. Their shoulders are bare and she is turned away from him. Maggie is wide awake, she looks scared and regretful. John kisses her bare shoulder. She tries to smile at him). Carter (groggily) You awake? Doyle Mmm-hmm. Carter Hey, it's raining. (He yawns and gets up to close the window. Maggie won't look at him. He pretends not to notice, but he doesn't touch her when he gets back in the bed). (Fade to black). END SCENE 4 END ACT 4 Well, that's the end. Once again, please send me feedback, comments, ideas...whatever! I like criticism too. Well, not too much criticism :). I will probably continue this fanfiction. AND YES, I KNOW MAGGIE IS A LESBIAN! That's the whole point of her being upset about sleeping with John. Just had to get that off my chest.
