The greatest encounter between East Fife and Kilmarnock has to be the Scottish Cup Final in 1938. On Saturday 23 April the sides drew 1-1 in front of a 79,000 crowd at Hampden Park with McLeod netting the Fifers' goal in the first half. McAvoy scored for the Ayrshire side. The following Wednesday evening (East Fife actually played a League match v East Stirling on the Monday between the Final and the Replay!) the teams met again at Hampden in front of a 91,700 crowd. East Fife took the lead through McKerrell, but by the time the half time whistle blew Kilmarnock had edged in front with goals from Thomson and McGrogan. McLeod equalised for the Fifers midway through the second period and after 90 minutes the score stood at 2-2. In the second period of extra time, Millar scored to put East Fife ahead before McKerrell scored his second and East Fife's fourth to put the match beyond doubt. This was the first time that the Scottish Cup was won by a team from outside the top league, a feat which has never been repeated.

The East Fife Cup Final team was: Milton; Laird, Tait; Russell, Sneddon, Herd; Adams, McLeod, McCartney, Millar, McKerrell. For the replay, Harvey replaced Herd at Left Half.
