East Fife's first ever First Division match was played against Motherwell at Fir Park on 9 August 1930. A crowd of 6,000 saw the 'Well win the match by four goals to one - a score which flattered the home side according to the match report in the local press. East Fife's solitary counter - their first ever goal in the top league - was a beauty. Centre forward Arthur McGachie latched on to a long ball lobbed down the field by centre half Joe Gowdy, dashed between two defenders and unleashed an unstoppable shot into the corner of the net. The first ever match between the sides was a Scottish Cup tie at Bayview on 28 January 1922, which Motherwell won 3-0. Incredibly, it was to take another 27 years after that first meeting before East Fife recorded their first victory over the Fir Park men - a 2-1 league victory at Fir Park in December 1948. The most significant encounter between East Fife and Motherwell is probably the 1-1 draw at Fir Park on the last day of the 1971/72 season which, coupled with Clyde's 0-0 draw at home to Airdrie, saved the Fifers from relegation.
