Wife: Unknown.  I have found no data to support Elizabeth Rannow 
as Edward's wife.
No other information at this time.

+3==========EDWARD RANSDELL [III]==========

Edward Ransdell was born in 1672 in St. Mary's Co., MD. He
was a Carpenter in 1699/1700 in Westmoreland Co., VA. He
signed a will on 6 Feb 1723 in Westmoreland Co., VA. probated
1 May 1724, filed 24 Jun 1724. He died in Jun 1724 in ,
Richmond Co., VA. In 1700 Abraham Ethell bound himself as
apprentice to Ransdale for 6 years as carpenter, cooper and
Joyner. Abraham had to promise not to get involved with any
woman and to make corn and Ransdale promised to provide him
apparel, diet, lodging, and tools.

1st Wife: Mary Gorham (1415).  was born in 1676 in
Westmoreland, Orange Co., VA. She died in 1718. Bound to
Henry Wharton in 1687 when her father MILES was gone from
home. Sometimes referred to as Mary Wharton for this reason.  

Note: From “Thornton of Richmond County, Virginia and
related families, James, Willis, Ransdell, Redman, Cox, Stwell,
Alford, Williams, Curtis, Obert”, pp. 14-16, Historical Southern
Families, No. 12, 1968, publ. by J.B. Boddie.  “Some effort has
been made to find the parentage of Mary, wife of Edward
Ransdell, but without success. The name of her eldest son would
indicate that she was a Wharton, but the scattered references to
Whartons in Westmoreland, Richmond, and Northumberland
Cos. offer no clue. In view of this, it is a fairly plausible
hypothesis that Mary Ransdell may have been identical with a
Mary Gorham, daughter of Miles and Susannah Gorham of
Westmoreland Co., who was bound out by her mother to Henry
Wharton April 12, 1687 until she could be 17 (O.B. 1675/6 -
1688/9, p. 561). Henry Wharton and his wife Elizabeth had no
children, and it is possible that Mary Gorham was fond of them
and named her first son for the family where she had passed her
adolescent years. The father, Miles Gorham, although he owned
land, seems to have been a somewhat erratic character, who
absented himself from his home from time to time. He and his
first wife Alice Gorham, appear in the Northumberland Co.
records as early as 1659 (Northumberland Record Book,
1658-66, pp. 35 and 39). They had one son, John Gorham, who
had been bound out to serve Capt. John Rogers in
Northumberland Co. during his father's absence, and was
returned to his father April 19, 1676 (Northumberland Co. O.B.
1666-78, p. 134). John Gorham died in Westmoreland Co. in
1699; he apparently married a daughter of Thomas Moore, who
made a deed of gift to his son, John Gorham, in 1693 (O.B.
1690-98, p. 111; O.B. 1698-1705, p. 72a; D. and W. No. 8, p.
10a; D.& W. No. 10, pp. 161-2). The last appearance of Miles
Gorham's first wife, Alice, was on Aug. 30, 1671, when she and
her husband deeded land in Westmoreland Co. (D. & W.
1665-77, p. 70). Miles Gorham was married by July 2, 1675 to
his second wife, Susannah (same, p. 240). He left the county
again about 1686, and his wife Susannah Gorham bound out her
children, Michael and Susannah Gorham to Robert King (O.B.
1675/6-1688/9, p. 528), and her daughter Mary to Henry
Wharton in 1687, as above. Miles Gorham appears to have
returned to Westmoreland Co. some time after this, for Henry
Wharton sued him in 1690 (O.B. 1690-98, p. 36); his wife
Susannah died somewhere about this time, and he married (3)
Winifred ____. Miles died in 1693, his widow Winifred being
appointed his administratrix, and Thomas Walker being her
security (O.B. 1690-98, p. 105). There may have been some
connection of the Gorhams with Thomas Walker (see section on
Walker in the article on the Asbury family), for Thomas Walker
was the trustee of the deed of gift from Thomas Walker to John
Gorham, son of John in 1693.

Daughter of Edward Ransdell (d1724).   Her will was dated 6
Apr 1742 and probated 3 May 1742.  She Left her estate to her
son, Jesse Thornton.

+5==========JOHN RANSDELL==========

John Ransdell, son of Edward Ransdell (d1724) moved to
Orange Co with his brother in law Luke Thornton. He was in
Orange Co in 1753, 1755, and 1758. About 1769 his children
were ordered to be bound out since he was a poor man. 

+6=========EDWARD RANSDELL (d1773)==========

Edward signed the Leedstown Resolves in Westmoreland County
in 1766.  According to Bob Moore, there is proof that he is the
son of Wharton and Ursula. (See section +7).

+7==========WHARTON RANSDELL [I](d1758)==========

Wharton born about 1696 in Westmoreland County was the son
of Edward Ransdell [III]  He was probably the eldest son. In
1749, he gave the bulk of his land in Prince William County.to
his elder sons William and Wharton. He died 6 years later in
1755 and named sons Wharton, William and Edward (land) and
daughter Sarah Elliott Pierce (land in Stafford County). William
received the remainder of his father’s land in Prince William.
Note: Stafford County was formed from Westmoreland County
in 1664, Prince William County was formed from Stafford
County in 1730 and Fauquier County was formed from Prince
William in 1759.

Wharton’s Wife Ursula Presly ?

Excerpts from “Genealogies of Virginia Families” (The Preslys
of Nortumberland): Wharton’s wife was Ursula Presly. They
were married sometime between 1713 and Jan 1720. Ursula
Presly was the widow of Daniel Neale and daughter of Col. Peter
Presly (son of William Presly and Jane Newman) and Elizabeth
Thompson (d/o Richard and Ursula Thompson). David Neale
was born in Northumberland about 1680 and died in 1713.
Children: Hannah Neale, Presly Neale, Christopher Neale of
Prince George Co, MD, Thomas Neale of Fairfax Co., Rodham
Neale, Frances Neale.[Thomas, Rodham and Frances may be
children of Christopher.]

Note (from Bob Moore): The Keach article on the Presleys calls
Mrs. Ursula  Bish (Bysshe) Thompson, grandmother of Ursula
Presley, the daughter of Philip Bish of Bristol. This is probably
incorrect. She was probably the daughter of Wm. Bysshe of co.
Surrey and was a relative of William Claiborne, for whom her
husband Richard Thompson worked on Kent Island in Md. I
found Ursula Bysshe's ancestry in an English publication at the
Library of Congress. Ursula Bysshe's brother Roger had a
daughter who married a Shelley, and they were the ancestors of
the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley.

RANSDELL of the County
WESTMORELAND gent: have for the Natural love and
affection I have for my dutifull Sons WHARTON RANSDELL
and WILLIAM RANSDELL give unto them as followeth 

First reserving to myself the use of One hundred acres of land in
Prince William County on BUTTONS BRANCH during my life
and afterwards to my two Sons herebefore mentioned & their
heirs forever, 

And then I give part of a tract of land to my Son WILLIAM
RANSDELL which I
purchased of Capt. THOMAS BARBER on and near CEDAR
RUN in Prince William County containing Three hundred and
fifty acres bounded beginning at a Corner of the said Land near

lived in Fauquier County, Virginia. His wife was Mary Chilton,
daughter of Thomas Chilton and Jemimah Cooke.

In his father’s will, William received land in Prince William
County on Cobbler’s Mountain. This land may have fell in
Culpeper County or on the Fauquier-Culpeper line. (Fauquier
was formed from Prince William; Culpeper was formed from
Orange). From Fauquier County, Virginia Deeds 1759-1778, p5

The Virginia Genealogist (The Chilton Families): On 23 Mar
1760, William Ransdell and Mary his wife of Hamilton Parish
sold 200 acres to Robert Ashby. ... Mary Ransdell was
charged with 350 acres on the Fauquier County land tax book of
1783. The next book showed her with only 82 acres and
transferred 268 acres to Aquila Dyson. The deed affecting this
sale was made on 27 Oct 1783 by Thomas Ransdell for L200
and did not describe the land as being part of the estate of
William Ransdell deceased or of Mary Ransdell. Chilton Ransdell
and Susannah his wife of Fauquier County relinquished all rights
to 50 acres sold to Benjamin scott by his late brother Wharton
Ransdell and 8 acres 28 square polws sold Scott by Thomas
Adams and on 29 Sep 1807 they conveyed to Thomas Adams
for $200 a tract of 157 acres formerly the property of William
Ransdell deceased, which was conveyed by Wharton Ransdell to
Thomas Adams, excepting 8 acres 28 poles.

The Virginia Genealogist (The Chilton Families): Thomas
Chilton died in 1765 ... He confirmed to his daughter Mary
Ransdell five Negroes in her possession and also gave her
another Negro for life with reversion to his grandson Chilton
Ransdell.

These are the children of William Ransdell and Mary Chilton
with comments from a letter by Bob Moore.

(1) Thomas Ransdell. Probably the Thomas Ransdell who d. ca.
Sept. 1796 with his estate administered by Chilton Ransdell with
Orrick Chilton and William Ball Jr. as Chilton's securities (see
Alcock's Fauquier Families). Difficult to distinguish him from
his cousin Thomas, son of Wharton. He left orphans John and
Maria, minors in 1809. He is probably the one who m. Mary 
(Morehead?) Ransdell 8 Nov. 1786. 
 
Thomas was named in his father’s will.  [From “The Virginia
Genealogist”, The Chilton Families: Thomas Ransdell was
appointed an officer in the Virginia Continental line and served
to the end of the war. He was recorded as entitled to land as a
captain from Jul 1776 to 4 Mar 1783. In Sep 1796, Chilton
Ransdell was granted administration on the estate of Thomas
Ransdell and gave bond for $6000 with Orrick Chilton and
William Ransdall as his securities. He was at the same time
appointed guardians of Maria and John Randsdell, only heirs of
Thomas.]

(2) William Ransdell. He could be the one who d. ca. 1788,
Fauquier Co.  (See, p. 290, Fauquier Families, 1759-1799,
where Turner Morehead was granted administration of that
William's estate.  William was named in his father’s will.

(3) Wharton Ransdell, living 1790, apparently died unm. See p.
290, Alcock's  Fauquier Families, where there is mention in
June 1792 of the selling of the estate of Wharton, son of William
and Mary to pay debts. It is assumed that he was the Wharton
whose heirs were involved in the 1809 court case against 
Wharton Ransdell's heirs.  He was named in his father’s will. 
Wharton sold 157 acres, part of the lot devised to him by his
father William Ransdell on 25 Nov 1789. He conveyed another
50 acres to Benjamin Scott on 8 Apr 1790.  I believe him to be
the bondsman for his sister Hannah’s marriage in 1779.

(4) Chilton Ransdell, d. 1808 Fauquier Co., Va. (see Fauquier
Will Book 4, pp. 516-17), m. 13 Jan. 1792, Fauquier Co., Va.,
cousin Susanna Chilton, dau. of William Chilton (Mary Chilton
Ransdell's brother) and Sarah Orrick.   He was named in his
father’s will.  

On 24 Apr 1787 he purchased 423 acres from George Fowke.
(Deed Book 17, pp 407-409, proven 24 Jul 1809; Wharton is
also named as grantee.). He m. Jan 1792, Susanna Chilton. He
died in 1808 leaving a will dated 21 Apr 1808 and proved 24 Oct
1808 in which he directed 200 acres of his plantation should be
sold to pay his debts and give the remainder of his estate to all of
his children, reserving 1/3 to his wife Susanna. He named his
wife executrix and friends William Chilton and William Bower
executors.

(5) Edward Ransdell. Mentioned in 1773 will of uncle Edward
and in his father's will. Not mentioned in the suit regarding his
brother Wharton's heirs. 

(6) Stephen Ransdell. Resided in Fauquier. Probably unmarried. 
He was mentioned in the suit regarding Wharton's heirs.  He was
not named in his father’s will but was named in the Mark
Anthony Chilton letter ..... They (the children of William and
Mary) were all very respectable with the exception of Stephen
and Ursula.  Stephen was a resident of Fauquier County and died
leaving John Ransdell his only heir (Ransdell v. Hunton).

(7) Mary Ransdell, apparently married, 5 Jan. 1789, Fauquier
Co., Va., John Clarke. Neither she nor any of her sisters were
mentioned in her father's will.  She was named in the Mark
Anthony Chilton letter as a daughter of William and Mary.

(8) Ursula Ransdell.  She was mentioned in letter from Mark A.
Chilton to Robert H. Chilton ...  They (the children of William
and Mary) were all very respectable with the exception of
Stephen and Ursula.    Ursula was cited by Dorman in his
Chilton family history and in the suit regarding heirs of brother
Wharton. 

(9) Sally Ransdell, m. 26 Sept. 1786, Fauquier Co., Va.,
Nathaniel Gray and  apparently died soon afterwards. Not named
in the suit regarding heirs of brother Wharton.

(10) Elizabeth (Betsy) Ransdell, m. 18 March 1789, Fauquier
Co, Virginia, Nathaniel Gray.  She was named in the 1809 court
case. and was named in the Mark Anthony Chilton Letter.

(11) Hannah Ransdell.  She was not named in her father’s will
nor was she named in the 1843 letter by Mark Anthony Chilton.
She was however named with other children of William and
Mary in  an 1809 court case in Fauquier, Catesby Graham vs.
among others  "representatives" of Wharton Ransdell, dec'd.
Also named as reps were Wm. Moore & Hannah, his wife,
Nathaniel Gray & Eliz. his wife; William Ball and Mary his wife;
Chilton Ransdell, Stephen Ransdell, Ursula Ransdell; John &
Maria (under 21), orphans of Thos Ransdell, dec'd, then listed
last were John & Lucy his wife.  [Being named first, she may
have been the eldest child.]
Hannah was born 22 Oct 1758 in Fauquier County and married
William Moore, an officer in the Revolution, on 08 Jan 1779 in
Fauquier County.  Wharton Ransdell, probably her brother, was
bondsman for the marriage.  The Moores moved to Fayette
County, Kentucky about 1790.  Hannah died Oct 1810. 
In a 1783 Fauquier deed William Moore’s  lands adjoined those
of Thomas Ransdell and Wharton Jr.

(12) John Ransdell m. Nov. 1792, Lucy Chilton, b. 20 Dec.
1773. Moved to  Henry Co., Ky. by 1809.  He was not named in
her father’s will nor was she named in the 1843 letter by Mark
Anthony Chilton.  [Note:  The MAC Letter says that there were
six sons but then names only five.]  He was however named with
other children of William and Mary in a lawsuit (See Hannah
above).

Chilton to his cousin Lieutenant R.H. Chilton, U. S. Drgs. at
Fort Gibson. “Dear Sirs: A few days ago I returned from a visit
to Ohio and Western Virginia, to which places I was about
setting out when your letter of the 13th of March, 1843, came to
hand. Since reaching home I have been afflicted with a bad cold
which has prevented me from answering you sooner. Before I
proceed to relate to you such parts of our Family History which
have come to my knowledge, I must premise that I am the
youngest child of the youngest son of my grandfather, Thomas
Chilton. When my father died, who was the last surviving son of
my grandfather, I was about three years of age. Consequently, I
could not have derived any invention from my uncles, neither
have I at any time had access to the family records, as they, by
the entail law, pertained to the eldest branch of the family. The
only information which I have obtained has been from our Aunt
Mary Ransdell a lady of estimable character, from my mother,
and from my sisters, brothers and cousin ....... My aunt, Mary
Chilton, married William Ransdall of Westmoreland County,
Virginia and moved to Fauquier, where she died. She had six
sons and three daughters, viz.: Thomas, William, Wharton,
Chilton (who married your Aunt Susan), Stephen, Elizabeth,
Mary and Ursula.  They were all very respectable with the
exception of Stephen and Ursula.” 

[Note by D.Fox: Mary Ransdell is quoted as the source of this
Ransdell history. She died aboaut 1789, 54 years before this
letter was written. Mark Chilton, the author of the letter was11
years old when she died.  Hannah Ransdell Moore left Virginia
for Kentucky about 65 years before Mark’s letter was written.  In
other words, it is highly feasible and highly probable that Hannah
could have been forgotten when Mark Anthony Chilton wrote his
genealogy.]

+12===========HANNAH RANSDELL==========

Hannah Ransdell was born 22 Oct 1758.  She married William
Moore in Fauquier County on 8 Jan 1779.  Wharton Ransdell
was bondsman for the marriage.  William Moore was a sergeant
and lieutenant in the Virginia line in the company of John
Chilton.  Not long after their marriage, William and Hannah left
Virginia to claim William’s bounty land in Fayette County,
Kentucky.  They remained in Fayette County for the rest of their
lives.

William Ransdell (see section 10) and Wharton Ransdell (see
section 9) were the only Ransdell men in Fauquier County of the
right age to be Hannah’s father.  Wharton Ransdell can be
eliminated as Hannah’s father because he named his daughters in
his will and Hannah was not named.  William Ransdell did not
name his daughters in his will and for this reason, I believe that
William Ransdell and Mary Chilton were Hannah’s parents.  A
few minor bits of circumstantial evidence .... (1) Hannah named
one of her sons Chilton (2) Mary Chilton Ransdell’s  only sister
was named Hannah and (3) William Moore and two of his sons
were the witnesses for the sale of 5000 acres of Chilton land in
Fayette County.  William Ransdell died a few years before
Hannah’s wedding and I believe that the Wharton Ransdell who
was her bondsman was her brother Wharton and not her uncle
Wharton.

The family of Mary Chilton Ransdell was described in a letter
written by Mark Anthony Chilton in 1843.  Noticeably, Hannah
was not named.  Mark Chilton wrote that his information came
solely from “our Aunt Mary Ransdall (a lady of estimable
character) from my mother and my sisters, brothers and
cousins”.  Surely, Mary would not leave out one of her own
children.  But, there were extenuating circumstances .... (1) Mark
Anthony Chilton (bc 1777) was only 11 years old when his Aunt
Mary Ransdell died in 1788  and (2) Mark Chilton wrote his
letter in 1843, which was 55 years after Mary Ransdell’s death
and about 63 years after Hannah left Virginia for good.  Given
these circumstances, it is highly feasible and probably highly
likely that Hannah would have been left out.

William Moore served with the Third Virginia Line from
1776 to 1779.  He entered service as a sergeant and was
discharged as a lieutenant.  In 1789, he moved to Fayette
CO, Kentucky, where he received large grants of land for his
service.  Some references give William’s birth as 1747 and
death as 1818. 
William’s father Samuel served in the French and Indian
Wars in 1755.  He was from Charles CO, Maryland and
owned land in Culpeper CO, Virginia in 1753.  Samuel was
Charity Courts’ second husband.  Her first husband was
Samuel Adams of Charles CO, Maryland.
