this article is retyped from: BUCKETFULL OF BRAINS magazine issue #29 (April/May 1989) "Lying Awake With Eleventh Dream Day" Since our article on the 11th Dream Day, in issue 26, things seem to be happening for the band. Their album PRAIRIE SCHOOL FREAKOUT was issued by New Rose and is selling like hotcakes across Europe; as in the USA (via Amoeba Records) the set is also available on CD with one extra track, "Tenth Leaving Train". Completists should also note that a previously unreleased version of Neil Young's "Southern Pacific" has been issued recently as a free 7" with the German magazine "Howl". When I spoke to New Rose recently, they told me that in response to the massive acclaim the band have received in Europe they are keen that the Eleventh Dream Day should tour in a few months' time; the label will also be issuing the band's hard-to-find debut mini-LP ELEVENTH DREAM DAY soon. In the meantime, a three track EP has just been issued - running to over 15-minutes the EP includes the aforementioned "Southern Pacific" (possibly the same recording as the "Howl" version) and "Tenth Leaving Train" plus one new band composition called "Go" (the EP will appear on both Amoeba and New Rose). As to what we may expect live, Heyday Records' Pat Thomas describes a March show by the Eleventh Dream Day at the Paradise Lounge in San Francisco: "I would say it was as good as any True West or Rain Parade show I've seen. They played a mixture of new and old songs - at times the two guitars recalled Television and on one song the funky feel of the slide guitar recalled early Led Zeppelin. As an encore, they played the Dream Syndicate's "Halloween" and none other than producer Sandy Pearlman walked into the club at that moment! He watched them and appeared to like them; after the show he spoke to Rick Rizzo about his guitar and how often the band played around San Francisco. All in all, it was a great night. The evening before I saw them do an all-acoustic set including a version of Television's "Friction" - followed by a set by Janet Bean and her friend Cathy, playing acoustic guitars and singing original songs along with old folk and country stuff under the name of Freakwater (the duo will be recording an album later this year)." After hearing the Eleventh Dream Day's track, "Awake I Lie", on this issue's free single you should need no further prompting to scarf up the band's other records - you will NOT be disappointed! Our thanks go to the Eleventh Dream Day for providing this unreleased track and to Pat Thomas for additional assistance - and 'cos he's a nice guy too! written by Jon Storey
