----------------------------------------------- PRIMITIVES - Collecting the Albums and Rarities ----------------------------------------------- This document is divided into three parts: Part I - Albums Part II - Videos Part III - Rarities (non-album tracks) My intentions are to give people a guide that they can use in tracking down all the album releases and the non-album tracks from the Primitives. If you know of anything not listed here then please email me and I'll update this guide with your information and give you full credit. My email address: (Dirk Horst) dhorst@airmail.net ------------------------------ PART I - THE PRIMITIVES ALBUMS ------------------------------ LOVELY (released in 1988) Serial number: RCA Records 8443-2-R Tracklist: 1. Crash 8. Way Behind Me (only on the re-release) 2. Spacehead 9. Nothing Left 3. Carry Me Home 10. Stop Killing Me 4. Shadow 11. Out Of Reach 5. Thru the Flowers 12. Ocean Blue 6. Dreamwalk Baby 13. Run Baby Run 7. I'll Stick With You 14. Don't Want Anything To Change 15. Buzz Buzz Buzz Comments: There are two versions of this album, one with 14 tracks and one with 15 tracks. Both versions of the album have the same artwork on the cover, but the initial version has RED lettering on the cover and does not have the song "Way Behind Me". The re-release of the album added this song and changes the red lettering on the cover to GREEN. I never understood why they did this, because their next album, 1989's PURE, had the same version of "Way Behind Me" anyway! PURE (released in 1989) Serial number: RCA Records 9934-2-R Tracklist: 1. Outside 9. Lonely Streets 2. Summer Rain 10. Can't Bring Me Down 3. Sick Of It 11. Way Behind Me 4. Shine 12. Never Tell 5. Dizzy Heights 13. Noose 6. All the Way Down 14. I'll Be Your Mirror 7. Secrets 15. All the Way Down (beat version) 8. Keep Me In Mind 16. I Almost Touched You Comments: There were two singles released prior to this album, and the CD adds the b-sides from those singles. Tracks 13-16 were all originally b-sides. LAZY 86-88 (released in 1989) Serial number: Lazy 15 CD Tracklist: 1. Thru the Flowers 7. Stop Killing Me 2. Across My Shoulder 8. Buzz Buzz Buzz 3. She Don't Need You 9. Laughing Up My Sleeve 4. Lazy 10. Shadow 5. Really Stupid 11. Thru the Flowers 6. (We've) Found A Way (To the Sun) 12. Everything Shining Bright Comments: This CD was issued on the Primitives' own indy label: Lazy Records. It compiles ALL of their indy releases prior to signing with RCA with one exception: the original version of "Ocean Blue", which is on the same single as the original version of "Shadow" - a single now known as the "Astoria gig freebie". GALORE (released in 1991) Serial number: RCA Records PD 75086 Tracklist: 1. You Are the Way 7. Hello Jesus 2. Lead Me Astray 8. Empathise 3. Earth Thing 9. See Thru the Dark 4. Give This World Away 10. Kiss Mine 5. Slip Away 11. Smile 6. Cold Enough To Kill 12. The Little Black Egg Comments: Very difficult release to find in the USA! I had no idea this even existed until I heard about it in 1994. Nonetheless, this is a very good album that is worth the work needed to find it. I *think* there is a version of this CD which also adds on some b-sides at the end, but I've been unable to verify this. That's all of the Primitives albums released during their existence. However, there are some other albums that are worthwhile buying because they compile some unreleased tracks. BOMBSHELL: THE HITS AND MORE (released in 1994) Serial number: RCA Records 74321226352 Tracklist: 1. Crash 11. Earth Thing 2. Stop Killing Me 12. All the Way Down (beat version) 3. Sick of It 13. Don't Want Anything To Change 4. Way Behind Me 14. Way Behind Me (acoustic b-side) 5. Thru The Flowers 15. Stop Killing Me (acoustic b-side) 6. Lead Me Astray 16. As Tears Go By (b-side) 7. Secrets 17. Secrets (demo, b-side) 8. Out Of Reach (original single version) 18. Crash (demo, prev. unreleased) 9. You Are the Way xx. You're So Square (Baby I Don't Care) 10. Empathise Comments: As you can see from the tracklisting, the CD is a great help to collectors who want to find some rare Primitives tracks that only appeared as b-sides on various singles. "You're So Square" is a "hidden bonus track" which can be located by playing track #18 until it ends, then waiting through approximately 1:30's worth of silence. An error on this CD is that track #17 and track #7 are actually the same. NEITHER track is the demo version! I don't know if this error was corrected in later pressings of the CD. THE BEST OF THE PRIMITIVES (released in ??) Serial Number: RCA Records ??? Tracklist: 1. Crash 11. Can't Bring Me Down 2. Spacehead 12. Way Behind Me 3. Shadow 13. Noose 4. Thru the Flowers 14. I Almost Touched You 5. Nothing Left 15. You Are the Way 6. Out of Reach 16. Lead Me Astray 7. Summer Rain 17. Slip Away 8. Sick of It 18. Give This World To You 9. All the Way Down 19. Empathise 10. Secrets 20. Earth Thing 21. All the Way Down (Beat version) Comments: This covers all the hits, but offers no rare versions or b-sides. BUBBLING UP (released in 1998) Serial Number: New Millenium Communications PILOT 38 Tracklist: 1. Where the Wind Blows 9. Dream Walk Baby 2. Across My Shoulder 10. Ocean Blue 3. Spacehead 11. Everything's Shining Bright 4. Crash 12. She Don't Need You 5. Stop Killing Me 13. Things Get In Your Way 6. Shadow 14. Keep Me In Mind 7. Buzz Buzz Buzz 15. Way Behind Me 8. As Tears Go By Comments: The above tracklist is incorrect. The actual order is: Stop Killing Me/Crash/Spacehead /Where the Wind Blows/Across My Shoulder/Buzz Buzz Buzz/Shadow/...(the rest are ok) Tracklist problems aside, this is a nice collection of BBC sessions recorded by the Primitives during their heyday. Here are the dates: 1-4 = Andy Kershaw session recorded June 18, 1986 5-8 = John Peel session recorded on Sept. 30, 1986 9-12 = John Peel session recorded on March 31, 1987 13-15 = John Peel session recorded on April 17, 1988 (track numbers apparently refer to the numbers listed on the cover - not their ACTUAL order) ------------------------------- PART II - THE PRIMITIVES VIDEOS ------------------------------- Sick Of It Really Stupid Crash Out of Reach Way Behind Me Thanks to Henry Jaremko for this information. ---------------------------------------------------- PART III - THE PRIMITIVES RARITIES (non-album tracks) ---------------------------------------------------- This is intended to be a guide to collecting all of the Primitives non-album tracks. I am not so much concerned with listing every VERSION of a particular release, as I am with listing all the different TRACKS that exist. With that in mind, please email me if you know of anything I've omitted here. My email address: (Dirk Horst) dhorst@airmail.net Having said the above, a good place to start collecting Primitives rarities is the BOMBSHELL compilation listed in the albums section above. Released in 1994 on RCA, it includes a number of rare tracks which would otherwise be difficult to find: Out of Reach (single version) - a bit more "revved up" than the album version on their debut LOVELY As Tears Go By - Rolling Stones cover that actually ends up sounding a lot like the Primitives' hit "Crash". Originally a b-side. Way Behind Me (acoustic) Stop Killing Me (acoustic) - these acoustic versions were originally b-sides. You're So Square (Baby I Don't Care) - a cover of the Buddy Holly song that Elvis made famous. This is a hidden bonus track on BOMBSHELL. Originally available only on the now very-difficult-to-find the NME's "The Last Temptation of Elvis" tribute album. Secrets (demo) - originally only available on the "Secrets" 12" single. My copy of BOMBSHELL actually DOESN'T have this demo version! Someone at the mastering plant apparently screwed up and put the album version of "Secrets" on the CD twice. I am unaware if this mistake ever got corrected. Crash (demo) - I think that the BOMBSHELL compilation is the ONLY place to find this version of "Crash". ----------------- Here's a list of some other rare tracks for which you'll have to track down the original sources: ----------------- Ocean Blue (demo) - from the Astoria gig free 7" (white vinyl!) Stick With You (live in the studio) Crash (live in the studio) - both from the "Crash" 10" single You Are the Way (September mix - by Robin Guthrie of Cocteau Twins) - from the "You Are the Way" 12" single Sun Pulse In My Dreams - from the "You Are the Way" CD single Under My Spell Haunted - from the "Spells EP" CD single Silent Night - from the "A Lump of Coal" Christmas compilation CD (released 1991 First Warning Records) Crash ('95 remix) - from the "Dumb and Dumber" soundtrack. A promo single was also released. ---------------- The Primitives also issued a number of live tracks on their singles: ---------------- live at the Mole Club in Bath, England (date?) 1. Sick of It 2. Give This World To You 3. OUTSIDE (need to find this single) 4. YOU ARE THE WAY (need to find this single) 3. Slip Away 4. Earth Thing 5. See Thru the Dark 6. Stop Killing Me 7. All the Way Down 8. Way Behind Me (all from various versions of the "Lead Me Astray" 12" single and the "Earth Thing"/"Empathise" 12" single. I *think* there is one more single (a 7" single!) which has two more live songs on it.) live tracks from the "Out of Reach" 7" & CD singles: (Glasgow College of Art, March '88) 1. Really Stupid 2. I Wanna Be Your Dog 3. Dreamwalk Baby 4. Crash ---------- Finally, there are some more BBC radio sessions that aren't on the BUBBLING UP compilation: ---------- Janice Long Session 1986 1. Stick With You 2. Really Stupid 3. Run Baby Run 4. Nothing Left Saturday Live (broadcast 10 Jan. 1987): 1. Stop Killing Me 2. Nothing Left 3. Buzz Buzz Buzz 4.
