ARMISTICE DAY
REMEMBRANCE CEREMONY 2000

11 NOV. - The Russel M. Butterweck Detachment will hold it's annual "Armistice Day Remembrance Ceremony in Veterans Grove, City Park, Reading, PA. The ceremony will be held at the 11th. hour of the 11th. day of the 11th. month, 1999, the exact hour, day, month of the signing of the Armistice ending the "War To End All Wars" WWI.

This ceremony commemorates the the men and women of our Nation's Services who fought that war. Since this day has been changed from "Armistice Day" to "Veterans Day" by Presidential Proclamation many years ago some of the great sacrifices made by the Veterans, including the USMC "Devil Dogs", who fought the "Dirty War" with it's mustard gas, muddy trenches and barbed wire, have faded from history. Our Detachments ceremony is planned to keep that memory alive.

REPORT ON CEREMONY

Korean War Armistice Day & Remembrance

Completed 27 July 1999 City Park, Reading PA
Sponsored by the Russel M. Butterweck Detachment, Marine Corps League

Well planned ceremony expressing the true spirit of the occasion. Received 8 wreaths including one from a Korean Church. The ceremony received much pre-publicity. including PSA announcements on radio and TV, and was listed several times in the Detachment Newsletter. It was covered by a newspaper reporter and photographer and 2 television crews who filmed the event.

VVA Chapter 113, Berks County PA, proudly and with honor, provided a color guard which posted the colors of all Services. India Battery, 14th Marines I&I Staff supplied the Firing Squad. Our own color guard was present. Master of Ceremonies Al Beadle, SgtMajor USMCR Retd. (Chosin Few) carried out his duty with excellence. Speaker Herbert Hummel Jr. (Korea 1951) spoke of the his part in the war, his preception of the meaning of the war, and the reception he received when he returned. Mollie Snyder, age 90, the only "Gold Star Mother" left of the Korean casualties, told of her reaction upon receiving the news that her son had died in Korea and the years that went by before she received his body. So that they would be remembered, the names of the 63 KIAs/MIAs/POWs from Berks County were read and rung "On Board" by the ships bell. "Taps," beautifully played, sounded with finality in the quite grove.

Two pictures and a nice story were published in the next days newspaper. Film clips of the event were run by the TV Stations or their local news programs. Congratulations were received from many sources.

Attendance only about 70 out of a county of over 300,000.Sadly only the usual faithful few from the Detachment were present. Evidently Marines do forget. or perhaps more important things had to be done by the rest.

KOREA, IT'S SAVAGE BATTLES, IT'S OVER 54,000 DEATHS, IT'S TORTUREOUS HILLS, IT'S TERRIBLE COLD AND IT'S HALTING OF THE SPREAD OF COMMUNISM, IS STILL "THE FORGOTTEN WAR!"

VAVS NEWS

THE BINGO PARTY NIGHT at Wernersville State Hospital 24 June again proved to be a popular and nice affair. Many thanks were received from the players. Once again I must give thanks to those members of the detachment who gave up some of their evening to give some pleasure to someone else....IRv Gehret who made the arrangements, Bob Geiss, Betty Suchenbach, Bob Berns, , Carl Kaupp, Ruth Slichter and Sally Hummel. Without their good services this great program would come to an end.

MARINE'S HYMN
(CLick On The Words To Hear The Music)

From the halls of Montezuma, to the shores of Tripoli, We fight our country's battles in the air, on land and sea. First to fight for right and freedom, and to keep our honor clean; We are proud to claim the title of United States Marines "

" Our flag's unfurled to every breeze from dawn to setting sun. We have fought in every clime and place, where we could take our gun. From the snow of far off northern lands and in sunny tropic scenes, You will find us always on the job, The United States Marines "

" Here's to health to you and to our Corps which we are proud to serve. In many a strife we've fought for life and we've never lost our nerve. If the Army or the Navy ever look on heaven's scenes, they will find the streets are guarded by United States Marines."

Reading, PA 03 May 2001: The oldest Armed Forces Day Parade in the nation has marched through Reading the Saturday after Mothers Day every year since 1948, except for one extremely rainy day a few decades back. But not this year. Due to not enough military groups committing to barely fill two divisions (just a few years ago, military groups filled 6 divisions of up to 25 groups each and 20 high school and civic bands marched) this years parade has been cancelled.. Set to kick off on 19 May the lack of interest in the parade is blamed on the fact that many Reserve Units are busy with more intensive training and have less time for Parades plus when there is not a military conflict going on, military events are pushed to the back of peoples mind. "People are not coming home in body bags and it seems that patriotic fervor dies out when we're not in conflict" However, even in a drenching rain last year, spectators lined the route, cheering the groups that marched. The USMCR unit in Reading, stationed first at the Reading Airport, now at 615 Kenhorst Blvd. , as well as several local musical units, and now their alumni, have participated in the parade since it's inception and were set to march this year when the decision to cancel was made.. Plans are being made to continue the tradition next year. D. Kline
