Monica Mason knew, the walk through the woods may be her very last walk. Yet there was something drawing her to come into the dark dankness of these lonely woods. She had been dreaming the same dreams for two years now. She is all alone, walking along the path that leads into the dense forest. She sees a shadow that seems to be ducking between the trees. It goes from one tree to the other, sometimes ducking out of sight for a few minutes. As she reaches the tree she saw it duck behind, somehow the shadow would appear a hundred yards ahead of her. The night was slowly falling, she was now able to see the path with just the light of the bright moon. The moon itself had an eerie glow. Nothing like the way the moon has ever looked in the real world. The whole thing was that Monica was always fully aware that she was dreaming. As she was walking, she would tell herself "Don't worry, it's only a dream". She wanted to hang on and stay in the dream for as long as she could, because, like most other dreamers; she wanted to see how it ended. She knew that since she knew it was only a dream and no harm could ever befall her. THIS IS WHAT SHE BELIEVED! She no longer had any idea where the shadow was. She was squinting her eyes to peer deeper into the length of the path, which was beginning to take on the form of a dark deep tunnel. It's still just a dream she kept reassuring herself. As she reaches the end of the tunnel, she can see the shadow. She sees it clearer because this part of the woods seem much brighter than when she entered the tunnel like path. The shadow seems almost to be dancing, again ducking and hiding behind the tree. As she approached the tree she knew he was hiding behind, her lungs began to fill up with rancid air. She felt nothing that should impede her breathing, yet she knew she couldn't draw another breath. SHE WOKE UP GASPING FOR BREATH. "It was just a dream". she told herself. She had the same dream numerous times, now it seemed to be nightly. It was a few days after the last dream that she found herself stranded along the roadside. Her car had died out and sat still and lonely in the approaching dusk. She was pacing between the road and the patch of high grass that ran along the woods. She could see lights that were moving back and forth, as a flashlight would swing if it were being carried with the lights shining on the path ahead. She thought she heard voices, distant but, voices none the less. She was sure if she went into the woods there she would find the help she needed. If they were carrying flashlights, maybe, just maybe someone would have a cell phone. Death finally ended the nightmares. Monica's body was found almost two weeks later. As they were removing her decayed body from the woods, two of the deputies swore they had seen something strange ducking between the trees. The autopsy showed no external or internal injuries. The frozen expression on her face was extreme fright, her mouth agape in a screaming silence. Did her years of..NIGHTMARES.. come to claim her? Background by: Nancy
