The old farm had been in our family for over a hundred years. It was an old rambling farm, which was operated by Pop and Gramps. Only the house was remodeled a few years back.

We were a large family. Only three of the nine children were old enough and strong enough to help with the chores. So things were tough for Pop and Gramps. Mom and Pop were married fourteen years, the ninth child Billy was only a few weeks old. We had our times of feast or famine, but it seemed this year it was more famine than feast.

Three Cows were kept for the family needs, They were our sole supply of milk, butter and cheese. They were pampered and well cared for, they were our main food supply when things got really tight.

Something was happening that no one seemed to be able to explain. Not even the local vet could come up with an answer, as why the cows would be dry every morning.

The end of the day the utters were swelling with the rich supply of milk, as they should be. Each night we would go to bed hopeful of tomorrow's bounty, but when the family awoke to it's morning chores, the milk buckets came back empty.

Stranger things were starting to happen. Billy awoke each morning at 2 am. hungry and screaming for his feeding. Mom was waking up with Billy's food supply already drained. Like the cows in the barn, her breasts were full when she went to bed, but dry when she woke up for the 2 am feeding. No rhyme or reason why this was happening.

Dad had enough problems with the cows becoming useless as milk givers and had begun to talk about sellng them for slaughter and bringing in a couple of new ones. He had started sleeping in the barn to see if someone was sneaking into the barn and milking the cows while the household slept. Now Mom had started to have the same problem.

That was when it was decided that Gramps would sleep in the barn and Pop would sit in the dark, and wait and watch while Mom slept. He would solve this mystery, one way or the other. The first couple nights sitting in a hard straight chair, Pop slept as soundly as Mom. It was Billy's hungry cries that awakened him. Alas poor Baby was again cheated out of his mid-night feeding. Well the answer to that was simple enough, Pop went to bed right after nightfall so he could get a few hours sleep before the rest of the house turned in.

Now he was able to sit through the night and be watchful. His chair was up against the far wall where he had a full view of Mom asleep in the bed. A soft breeze blew through the window that was a few feet from the bed. the curtains were blowing in and out with the breeze. Pop was almost put asleep watching the hypnotic swaying of the curtains. When the bright moonlit movement came through the windows, he sprang wide awake.

Slithering in through the open window was a huge brightly colored snake. He watched almost in a trance as the snake slithered onto the bed and into Mom's unbuttoned night gown and began to suckel a breast. As he jumped up from the chair, knocking it over in the process, the snake quickly made it's exit from the same window it came in through.

The next night both Pop and Gramps were waiting in the bushes, Sickels in Hand....Mom was never told about her late night Diner Guest...

It's nest of eggs were found both under the porch and in the barns. They were quickly DESTROYED.

Once again there's plenty of milk, butter, and cheese on the table. Baby Billy is happy, healthy and growing.
