Firehose My thoughts: I've always thought it's really important to keep your mind
open to different kinds of music, and not just say "They're a metal band
and I hate metal, so I think they suck," or "Those guys are totally lame
because they're an emo band and emo sucks." I don't know if its just
because of the way I was exposed to music when I was growing up, or what,
but I never really thought of music like "this is punk, and this is
hardcore," as if they were two separate things that had nothing in common
with each other. It feels like I turned my head away from the scene for a
minute and when I looked back all the kids were about "old school vs. new
school" or "punk vs. hardcore" or "hardcore vs. emo" or whatever. I'd like
to think that we're all in the same boat here, but it seems as if way too
many people these days are just concerned with denouncing every aspect of
the scene that isn't restricted to whatever little clique they conform
themselves to. All I want to do is play songs that are positive and
meaningful, and whether that appeals to the punk crowd, the hardcore crowd,
I don't really care. I just wish we could get far enough past all the
labels and classifications to see what's really important.
