SERIES OVERVIEW AND CAST INFO
Hello, Larry is about a radio talk show host who moved from L.A. to Portland, Oregon, with his two teenage daughters following the breakup of his marriage. The main cast: McLean Stevenson as Larry Alder; Donna Wilkes (Spring 1979) and Krista Errickson (Fall 1979-80) as Diane; Kim Richards as Ruthie; Joanna Gleason as Morgan Winslow, Larry's Producer; and George Memmoli as Earl, Larry's corpulent engineer. Ruth Brown appeared time to time, as Leona, a neighboring tenant in the Alder's apartment building. In the Fall of 1979, the second and final season, Shelley Fabares, periodically appeared as Marion - Larry's ex-wife. Meadowlark Lemon, formerly of the Harlem Globetrotters, joined the cast (as himself). John Femia played Tommy, the witty wise-cracking teenage neighbor who often is seen on the show. Finally, Fred Stuthman was added as Larry's father Henry. It's no coincidence that Hello, Larry bore resemblance to One Day At A Time, for Hello, Larry's executive producers Dick Bensfield and Perry Grant (for Norman Lear's T.A.T. Communications)-had also worked on One Day At A Time. Shelley Fabares also was part of One Day At A Time's cast at one point in time. From time to time efforts were made to shore up the Hello, Larry ratings by cross pollinating it with fellow NBC sitcom series Diff'rent Strokes. Diff'rent Strokes' Phillip Drummond, it turns out, was an old Army buddy of Larry's, facilitating the appearance of the cast members on each others' series.

...And More Background Information!

The Hello, Larry cast appeared on what were originally (3) one-hour long episodes of Diff'rent Strokes (see above guide). Diff'rent Strokes appeared on NBC in the time slot just before Hello, Larry. NBC tied in Larry Alder as an old service friend of Diff'rent Strokes character Phillip Drummond. Diff'rent Strokes was already a popular sitcom on NBC and this tie-in was an attempt to attract more viewers to Hello, Larry. See the Diff'rent Strokes Online Link for more pertinent info!

During the 1st season of Hello, Larry the show was often interupted or pre-empted all together for news reports/updates on the Iranian Hostage Crisis that was currently gripping the nation. This obviously hampered the ratings to some extent. I'd be curious to know how many times the show was interupted.

NBC did re-run episodes of Hello, Larry in it's late-night weekend movie time slot in the summer and early fall of 1981 (a year after the show was cancelled). They were shown in a two hour block of four episodes at 1 am Eastern Zone time on a few choice Saturday and Sunday nights. I know of where I can find info. on which episodes were re-run in these spots and the dates NBC re-aired them like this. It may take some extra time to do this, but hope to post this information before too long.

Sony Entertainment Television has recently (1998) been airing Hello, Larry in Brazil on cable tv. The show has never been syndicated in the USA. This recent showing in Brazil by Sony may be a good sign that the show may eventually air here again in the USA.
