Herbert Lawrence Wallace, 89 Herbert Lawrence Wallace, 89, of Prescott died at St. Lawrence Lodge in Brockville on June 22, 1999. He was born in Ventnor on June 24, 1910 to Robert Wallace and Elizabeth (Gilmer) Wallace. The family moved to Pleasant Valley where Herbert went to school and helped on his father's farm. On June 10, 1931 he married Mabel Pauline Fader and they farmed in the South Mountain area for a number of years.  Herbert also did carpentry and worked for Fred Weagants Farm Machinery as parts man. He was also a Rawleigh dealer until his retirement in 1983 when they took up residency in Prescott. He was a member of the Orange Lodge for 71 years and also belonged to the Royal Black Perceptory #509 Lodge of Winchester and L.O.B.A. 483 in Groveton. Mr. Wallace is survived by his wife Mable of St. Lawrence Lodge, Brockville, a son Lawrence and his wife Shirley of South Mountain, a daughter-in-law Joan of Millbrook, seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a brother Mansel Wallace, of Winchester, sisters Nelda Stinson and Dorothy Moore, of Prescott, sisters-in-law Lulu Gilmer, of Kemptville and Marie Wallace, of Prescott along with several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son Claire Wallace, a grandson Michael, a brother Kenneth and his parents. Friends and family called at the Grant Brown Funeral Home-MacDonald Chapel, Dibble Street, Prescott where the funeral service was held on June 25 with Rev. Georgia Copland officiating. Burial followed at Hainsville Cemetery. The pallbearers were grandsons Kim and Kevin Wallace, nephew Glenn Gilmer and members of the Orange Lodge Lloyd Wylie, Preston Gilmer and Ronald Warren. Lyall Brown, a good friend and Lodge member, was an honourary pallbearer. Mary (Mae) Whitmore, 93 Inkerman native Mary (Mae) Whitmore died at St. Lawrence Lodge in Brockville on June 17, 1999. She was 93. Mrs. Whitmore is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Merrill Whitmore (in 1950) and by her sisters Dora "Kathleen" McKee and Annie Murphy and her brother Bernard McKee. She was born at Inkerman on November 9, 1905, to the late Patrick McKee and Margaret Cryan. She was raised and educated in that community. Mrs. Whitmore worked at the Daniel's Hotel in Prescott as a housekeeper. She was affiliated with St. Mark's Church in Prescott. Visitation was held at the Grant Brown Funeral Home-MacDonald Chapel, Dibble St., Prescott on June 21. Mass of Christian Burial took place on Tuesday, June 22 at 11 a.m. Father J. Clifford Swerdfeger He loved to play euchre and he always enjoyed a good night out at the stock car races. A lifetime resident of the Iroquois area who enjoyed gardening, Clifford Swerdfeger, 90 years of age, Thursday, June 3rd at his last place of residence, Wellington House Nursing Home, Prescott. Born in Froatburn, August 13, 1908, he was a member of the Lutheran Church. A foreman with the painting crew at Brockville Psychiatric Hospital for over 32 years, he was also an honourary life member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 370 in Iroquois, belonged to the Orange Lodge, the Woodsmen of the World and the Brockville Masonic Lodge. He was predeceased by his father and mother, Jim and Flora (nee Smith) as well as his first wife, Ruth Barkley, his brother Doung and step-son Carl. He is survived by his second wife Bessie Crowder, son Anson (Donna) of Carleton Place; step-sons Gerald (Lorraine) Henophy of Iroquiois; Morris (Ethel) Henophy of RR1 Brinstson; daughters Marilyn (Charlie) Slack of Lyn; Carolyn (Phil) Sauve of RR1 Brockville and step-daughter Patsy Strader (John Martin) of Iroquois. The step-father-in-law of Dorcas Henophy, RR2 Williamsburg, he will be sadly missed by 11 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Donations to Wellington House Palliative Care were appreciated by the family. Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home in Iroquois, Friday June 4th.  The funeral service, presided over by Rev. Jo Barkley-Probst, was held at the funeral home on Saturday June 5th, 1999. Vivian Ruth Perrin, 69 Vivian Ruth Perrin died on May 24 at the Brockville General Hospital at the age of 69. She was born on October 12, 1929, in Williamsburg, Ontario.  She was the daughter of Ishia and Mable Harper.  She was raised and educated in Williamsburg.  She later moved to Brockville where she worked at Phillips Cables.  She married William Ernest Perrin, who pre-deceased her in 1989, and they had five sons and two daughters.  She quit work to raise her family. Mrs. Perrin was affiliated with the St. John's United Church.  She loved to garden and her children were the centre of her life. She is survived by her sons Roger Harper (Linda) of Brockville, Garry Perrin (Marilyn) of Brockville, Art Perrin (Jo-Anne) of Prescott, Leonard Perrin (Judy) of Prescott, and Allan Perrin of RR 1 Prescott;  daughters Marilyn Coville (Douglas) of Maitland and Linda Perrin (Brian) of Brockville.  Also surviving are two step-children, Ken Perrin (Betty) of Maitland, and Ernie Perrin (Kay) of RR 2, Prescott;  a number of brotherss and sisters, nine grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, Mrs. Perrin was predeceased by a step-son, Charles Perrin. Friends called at the Barclay Funeral Home where the funeral was held on May 26 in the chapel, with Rev. Eric Barr officiating.  Burial followed at the Maynard Cememtery.  Pallbearers were Jamie and David Coville, and Doug, Garry, Ernie and Stan Perrin. James Arthur Wainwright, 84 CARDINAL - James Arthur "Art" Wainwright died May 23 at Winchester District Hospital.  He was 84. Born July 25, 1914, in Sydney, Nova Scotia, he was the son of John Wainwright and the former Margaret Bright. Born and raised in Sydney, Mr. Wainwright married the former Nora Wood on January 21, 1934.  He moved to Boucherville, Quebec in 1965 after being transferred as a result of his job as a steel worker with Sidback Dosco Steel. Mr. Wainwright remained in Quebec for 11 years before retiring and moving RR #1 Cardinal. He was a member of the Canadian Armed Forces and served overseas during the Second World War.  He was also a Royal Canadian Legioon member, serving as president of the Sydney branch from 1949 to 1958. He is survived by his daughter Barbara Wainwright, of Cardinal, and sister Lily McLeod, of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. Also surviving are grandchildren Jodi Lyn Terlecki, James Arthur Gabriel, Jade Nora Terlecki, William Matthew Gabriel and Jacob Harold Gabriel and seven great-grandchildren. Besides his parents and wife, Mr. Wainwright was predeceased by a daughter, Joan Gabriel and brothers Thomas, George and John. On May 24, there was a Legion service and friends called at Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home in Iroquois.  The following day , a funeral was held at the funeral home with Rev. Doug Hayman officiating. Interment will follow at a later date in Nova Scotia. John Corry, 64 CARDINAL ­ Lifetime Cardinal area resident John "Fuzz" Corry died at Brockville General Hospital on May 22, 1999. He was 64. He is survived by his wife Judy Shaver whom he married on September 5, 1959 at Winchester and by sons Robert (Carol), of Morrisburg and Peter, of Cardinal as well as by daughter Elizabeth (Tootsie) (Bart) Dixon, of Cardinal. Also surviving is brother Edward and sisters Marsha Windsor and Beverly Reynolds, of Alberta and Linda Kelly, of Winchester as well as sister-in-law Carol (Frank) Rooney, grandchildren Natalie and Kurtis Corry and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Corry was predeceased by sister Sylvia and brother James as well as by his parents Stewart Corry and Mildred Wallace to whom he was born at Inkerman, Ont. on October 16, 1934. He lived in Iroquois and Winchester as well as in Cardinal where he resided for the past 16 years. Mr. Corry was retired from Best Foods, Cardinal, was a member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 105, in the village and was a former member of the Dundas County Flyers. John Kirkwood, 74 PRESCOTT ­ Prescott resident John Robert Kirkwood died at Brockville General Hospital on May 22, 1999. He was 74. Mr. Kirkwood is survived by his wife Doreen, of Prescott and by daughters Brenda, of Prescott, Nancy (Rick Farmer), of Johnstown and Martha and her friend Brian, of Brockville as well as by his sons John Jr. (Shirley), of Johnstown and Michael and his friend France, of Cornwall. Also surviving are grandchildren Shannon and her friend Randy, Christopher and his friend Missy, Samantha, Geoffrey, Ryan and his fiance Nicki, Lezlie and Jamie as well as great-grandchildren Emma and Victoria. Mr. Kirkwood is also survived by sisters Jean Kerr-Koontz, Frances Thompson, Donelda McMillan and Louise Freeman. He was predeceased by his brothers Ralph and Richard and by his parents Frank Kirkwood and Blanch Weaver to whom he was born on May 25, 1924 at Inkerman. Mr. Kirkwood was self-employed as a mason in construction. A graveside service was held at Maple Ridge Cemetery. Rev. Gerry Ring officiated. Charles Taylor, 67 Cardinal area resident Charles Taylor died at Winchester District Memorial Hospital on May 12, 1999. He was 67. He is survived by his wife Catherine Taylor, by daughter Margaret (Gerry) Schrock, of Ackeron, New York and by sons Sam of Edmonton, Fred (Peggy) of R. R. # 1 Cardinal and Peter (Kathy), of Brinston. Also surviving are his mother, Mary Irene Chapman and grandchildren Fred, Tim and Hannah Schrock, James and John Taylor and Guin and Keith Taylor and sister Lillian (Howard) Hurst, of Ottawa. He was predeceased by a brother, Robert and by his father Fred Taylor. He was born in Ottawa on July 2, 1931, the son of Fred Taylor and the former Mary Irene Chapman. On October 8, 1955 he married Catherine at Jasper, Ontario. Mr. Taylor worked at DuPont before retiring from the Maitland plant and then did some farming. He was a member of the Brockville Flying Club and the Cardinal Community Choir and was involved in various volunteer activities in the community. The funeral service was held at the Free Methodist Church, in Cardinal on May 14 at 1 p.m. The Ministerial Association officiated. Interment was at Roselawn Cemetery, in Maitland. Art Wainwright, 84 Nova Scotia native James Arthur "Art " Wainwright of R. R. # 1 Cardinal died at Winchester District Memorial Hospital on Sunday, May 23, 1999. He was 84. Also surviving are grandchildren Jodi Lyn Terlecki (Stephane Ranger), James Arthur Gabriel, Jade Nora Terlecki, William Matthew (Erin) Gabriel and Jacob Harold (Paula) Gabriel and great-grandchildren Joan Addison, Jakob Emil, Joan Alice, Thomas Bryan, James Arthur Lucas, Brianna Emily and Laura Elizabeth. He was predeceased by his wife Nora Wainwright (nee Wood), whom he married January 21, 1934 in Sydney, Nova Scotia, a daughter Joan Gabriel, brothers Thomas, George and John and by his parents John Wainwright and Margaret Wainwright to whom he was born on July 25, 1914 in Sydney, Nova Scotia. Mr. Wainwright was raised in Sydney and was a member of the Canadian Armed Forces, serving overseas during World War two. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 128, in Sydney where he served as president from 1949-1958. He moved to Boucherville, Quebec in 1965 on a transfer with his job with Sidback Dosco Steel. He moved to the Cardinal area when he retired 21 years ago. Mr. Wainwright was a well-respected and much-loved man who enjoyed children and was always concerned for their safety and well-being. Donald "Dwight" Baldwin Lifetime Inkerman area resident Donald "Dwight" Baldwin died at the Winchester Hospital   Tuesday, April 20, 1999. He was 81. Mr. Baldwin had been ill for two-and-a-half years. He had lived at the Hartford Home, in Morrisburg for the past three years but had previously lived his life in the Inkerman area, working as a farmer and an electrician. He was affiliated with Inkerman United Church. Mr. Baldwin loved gardening and was an excellent skater in his younger years. He was born in Mountain Township on October 15, 1917 to the late Roy Baldwin and the late Hazel Baldwin (nee Hess). He is survived by his wife Maxine Baldwin (nee Bell) whom he married on September 25, 1943 at her parents' home in Winchester. Also surviving is son Gordon Hanson, of Toronto, daughter Lynda (Les) Barkley, of Iroquois, brother Clifford (Jean), of Johnstown and sister Doris (Garfield) Wright, of Cardinal as well as grandson Kevin Barkley and great-grandson Kyle Barkley, both of Iroquois. Matilda Township native Alice Liezert, 77 Matilda Township native Alice Liezert died at the Ottawa General Hospital on Tuesday, April 20, 1999. She was 77. She was born in the township on September 18, 1921 to the late George Fader and the late Annie Fader (nee May). She was a lifetime resident of the Hainsville and Pittston area and lived at R.R. # 2 Brinston at the time of her death. Mrs. Liezert was predeceased by her husband Gordon Liezert whom she married on April 19, 1938 at the Presbyterian Church Manse in Prescott. She worked as a homemaker and was an excellent cook ­ the dressing she made at Christmas time was always a family favourite. She loved her cat "Fluffy" and enjoyed watching birds, especially humming birds at her birdfeeder in the yard. In her earlier years, Mrs. Liezert enjoyed getting together with neighbours to play euchre.  Music was always a part of her life, as well. She played piano and steel guitar when the family got together to sing hymns. She enjoyed flowers, especially African Violets and she also liked to knot and do "Wonder Word" puzzles. Mrs. Liezert is survived by her children, sons Donald (Barbara), of R. R. # 5 Brockville, Doug (Cheryl) of R. R. # 2 Brinston and Dale (Marian), of R. R. # 2 Brinston and daughters Ann (Wayne) Disheau, of Morrisburg and Deborah (Mike) Shaver, of Stampville. Mrs. Liezert is also survived by 12 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, in Iroquois on April 22. Donald Mullin At home on Dundas Street, Iroquois, on Thursday, April 15, 1999, Donald "Moon" Mullin. Born on December 3, 1927, in Morrisburg, Don was 71 years of age.  A lifetime resident of the Iroquois area, he had retired in April of 1997 from work with the Canadian Coast Guard in Prescott after a career that spanned 32 years.  His occupation was welder. Predeceased by his parents, William and Maude (nee Steed), "Moon" as he was affectionately known by all was an extremely hard working man who was very devoted to his family. Mourning the loss are his wife, Dorine (nee Helmer) whom he wed on December 27, 1952 in Welland.  Also surviving the loss are sons:  Donald of RR1 Morrisburg; Bill (Martha), Bruce(Pam) and Randy, all of Iroquois.  Daughters who are saddened by the loss are Dixie Beckstead of Iroquois, Caindy (Dale) Adams of Morrisburg and Tammy (Brent) Spencer of Domville.  A sister, Ruth Kirkwood of Morrisburg, 10 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews mourn the loss. Ruth Coons On April 13, 1999, Ruth vivian Coons of Brinston at the Winchester and District Hospital. Born on July 30, 1910, in Matilda Township, Ruth was 88 years of age.  She lived her entire life except for a brief time in Prescott, in Matilda Township, in Brinston Hamlet which she dearly loved.  A homemaker and store keeper, Ruth was a lifelong member of the Brinston United Church where she played the organ for more than 60 years.  She was a member of the Brinston Rebekkah Lodge. Predeceased by her parents, Wellington and Georgia Seeley (nee Hamilton); her beloved husband, Charles whom she wed on April 10, 1929, in Iroquois; and her beloved son, Gordon Coons; a sister, Doris (Charlie) Shaver and a brother, Graham Seeley.  Ruth will be sadly missed by all who knew her and came into contact with her. Mourning the loss are family' Shirley and grandchildren, Wayne (Marilyn), Diane (Casey), Candace, Doug (Laura), Joy, Bill (Margaret); and 8 great-grandchildren.  Two sisters, Blanche Leroux of Prescott and Hilda (Arnold) Johnston of Belleville, as well as nieces and nephews. A Rebekkah service was held at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home in Iroquois, where friends called on Thursday evening.  Service was at Brinston United Church on Friday, April 16, 1999, with Rev. Angela Bailey officiating.  Eulogies were spoken attesting to the wondervul lady who will be sorely missed by the community, by long time friends, Joan Zandbergen and Lorne Strader.  A scripture reading was done by great-niece Sandra Lee Johnston.  Interment followed at Sprecehaven Cemetery, Brinston. Lila Sullivan On Wednesday, April 7, 1999, aafter a lengthy illness, Lila Sullivan, lifelong resident of the area at Winchester District Memorial Hospital. Born in Dunbar on April 24, 1922, Lila was 76 years of age. A housewife who enjoyed baking, knitting and playing the piano, Lila was a member of the Hulbert Valley United Church. Predeceased by her parents, Ellery and Nellie (nee Pemberton) Merkley, and brother, Lee. Lila leaves to mourn the loss, her husband, Lyle whom she wed on June 18, 1941 in Elma: as well a son, Lee (Tammy) of Ottawa; a daughter Lorna (Steve) Sayeau of Morrisburg and a brother, Ray (Josephine) of Florida.  She is sadly missed by grandchildren, Sandra (Anthony), Mark (Tara), David, Lisa and Matthew and a great-grandson Jeffrey.  She is survived by a sister-in-law, Lola Ace of Winchester as well. Memorial donations were appreciated by the family to the Winchester Hospitall, the Hulbert-Valley Church and the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Former Cardinal resident Dwayne Cecil Daw Dwayne Cecil Daw, a resident of Wellington House, formerly of Cardinal, passed away March 25, 1999, after a lengthy illness. He was 74. Dwayne was born in Matilda Township on March 10, 1925, the son of Harry Daw and Bessie Sayeau. He worked as a millright, and joined Casco in 1942. When he turned of age, Dwayne joined the RCAF and completed three years of service during the Second World War in both Canada and England. Following the war, he returned to Cardinal and worked at Casco until his retirement in 1987. Dwayne was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #105 for 50 years and held various positions over that time. He was affiliated with St. John's United Church in Cardinal. Dwayne is survived by sons Ron of Ottawa and Jim (Susan) of Cambridge; and daughters Kathy (André) Thivierge of Stittsville and Nancy Marchand of Renfrew. He is also survived by brothers Carl (Bette) of Ajax and Gordon (Blanche) of Cardinal; and sisters Ina (Harry) Loft of Wasaga Beach and Marion Mackay of Brockville. Dwayne will be sadly missed by nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren, and by his special friends Betty and Brenda. He was predeceased by his parents, brothers Alfred and Denzil, and sister Dorothy. Funeral services were held at the Marsden-McLaughlin Funeral Home in Cardinal on Saturday, March 27. Rev. Prescott resident Lloyd W. Gallinger Prescott resident Lloyd W. Gallinger died at Wellington House Nursing Home, in Prescott on February 10, 1999. He was 79. He was born on January 31, 1920 at Aultsville to the late Herbert Gallinger and Nettie Warren. He was raised and educated in Aultsville then graduated from Grade 13 at Morrisburg high school. Mr. Gallinger served as a corporal with the Duke of York Royal Canadian Hussors and the 7th Canadian Regiment in the United Kingdom and Central Europe. He received the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star and the Canadian Volunteer Medal and Clasp. Mr. Gallinger served on the executive of Branch 97, Royal Canadian Legion in Prescott and enjoyed lawn bowling and darts. He worked with the Ministry of Correctional Services and upon his retirement worked with the Corps of Commissionaires at DuPont. Mr. Gallinger is survived by sisters Dorothy Arkless, of Cornwall and Greta Bird of Williamsburg as well as by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and by his wife, Lola (Hess) Gallinger as well as by brothers Allan, Reginald, Harry, Kenny, Graham and Bernie and sisters Hilda Brownell and Blanche Loucks. Visitation was held at the Chris Slater Funeral Home, Edward St., Prescott on February 11. The Legion also held a Memorial Service at the funeral home on that date. Funeral services were held at the funeral home on February 12. Rev. Gerry Ring officiated. Pallbearers were members of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 97 - Capt. Sayeau, Jake Underhill, Don Lanktree, Randy Prophet, Jean Paul Pidgeon and Tut McKinnon. Burial was at Union Cemetery in Williamsburg. - Prescott Journal, March 31, 1999.

Matilda Township native Alice Beatrice Holmes Matilda Township native Alice Beatrice Holmes died at St. Lawrence Lodge, in Brockville on Saturday, March 27, 1999. She was 96. She was born on February 16, 1903 in Matilda Township to Rumsey Peterson and Elizabeth Strader. She was raised and educated in the township, living there until she married Braynerd Holmes on June 29, 1927 at home (Toyes Hill) and moved to the Shanly area. She worked as a farm wife and a housewife and was active in many organizations at Shanly United Church where she also was the organist. Mrs. Holmes was also organist at Brinston United Church. Her hobbies included needlework, fancywork and gardening. She was a perfectionist at her work. Mrs. Holmes was predeceased by her parents and by her husband, who died in 1980 as well as by a brother, Arnold. She is survived by daughters Mabel (Mrs. Melville Bruce), of Cardinal and Joan (Mrs. Douglas Plumadore), of Iroquois. Also surviving are brothers George (Nelda) Peterson, of Prescott and Ward (Happy) Peterson, of Ottawa as well as grandchildren Judi Bruce, David Bruce (Arlene), Catherine Horne (Donald), Anita Plumadore and eight great-grandchildren. Visitation was held at the Grant Brown Funeral Home-Purcell Chapel, Spencerville . A private family service was held in the chapel of the funeral home on Monday, March 29, 1999. Rev. Brinston area resident Gordon Liezert Brinston area resident Gordon Liezert died at Winchester Hospital on Monday, March 22, 1999. He was 84. Mr. Liezert was born in Edwardsburgh Township on May 24, 1914 to the late Roy Liezert and Nellie (Wright) Liezert. He was raised and educated in the township. One of his first jobs was working with Jim Steinburg cutting ice blocks from the river in winter, storing them and then selling them in the summer months. After he finished working for Jim, Mr. Liezert worked at several places including the Seaway Locks, Fetterly's and Bowden's garages in Iroquois, Western Tire and Canadian Tire, in Prescott and finally Caldwell Linen Mills, in Iroquois. He moved to the Hainsville area in 1938 after marrying Alice Marguerite (Fader) Liezert on April 19 at the Prescott Presbyterian Church Manse. The couple lived in that area for 61 years. Mr. Liezert loved to farm, fish and hunt. His other passions included his race horse Big Red, feeding the Cardinals and cutting anyone's hair that needed a trim. He had a great sense of humour and was musically talented, playing both the piano and the violin. Mr. Liezert is survived by his wife and by his sons Donald (Barbara) of R. R. # 5, Brockville, Doug (Cheryl) of R. R. 2 Brinston and Dale (Marian) of R. R. # 2 Brinston as well as by daughters Ann (Wayne) Disheau, of Morrisburg and Deborah (Mike) Shaver, of Stampville. Also surviving are brother Herbert (Reta) of R. R. # 1 Cardinal and sisters Muriel (Jim) Irving, of Spencerville and Olive (Shaun) Carey, of Thornhill. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Liezert was predeceased by his parents, a sister Marguerite Hutchcroft and a brother Harold. Visitation was held at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, in Iroquois on March 24. Funeral services were held at the funeral home on Thursday, March 25 at 1 p.m. Rev. Georgia Copland officiated. Spring interment will be at Hainsville Cemetery. Memorial donations to the Winchester Hospital are appreciated. - Prescott Journal, March 31, 1999.
