1840 Census

Both male and female residents of any given household were recorded in age groups of: Under 5 years, 5 to 10 yr., 10 to 15 yr., 15 to 20 yr., 20 to 30 yr, 30 to 40 yr., 40 to 50 yr., 50 to 60 yr., 60 to 70 yr., 70 to 80 yr., 80 to 90 yr., 90 to 100 yr., and 100 and over.

Actually the wording is "& under", so it translates to "20 yr. and under 30 yr."

The ages recorded in the 1840 Census of Noxubee County, Ms. are recorded to reflect the ages of the males first, followed by the females of the household. To interpret the ages, read left to right, the oldest person will be the last entry, as in: 01001-11001. This translates to: one male, age 5 to 10 yrs., and one male, 20 to 30, with the females shown as one female under 5 yr, one female age 5 to 10 yrs., and one female 20 to 30.

...Poindexter solomnily swear that the number of persons set forth in the return made by me agreeably to the provision to the act entitled "An act to provide for taking the Sixth Census or numeration of the inhabitants of the United States" have been ascertained by an actual inquiry at every dwelling house, or a personal inquiry of the head of every family, in exact conformity with the provisions of said act and that I have, in every respect, fulfilled the duties required of me by said act, to the best of my abilities; and that the return aforesaid is correct and ture, according to the best of my knowledge and belief.

Be it remembered that on the 30th day of October 1840, came before me James Poindexter, a resident in the County of Noxubee District of North Mississippi an assistant to the Marshal of the Northern District of Mississippi for performing the duties prescribed by the act of Congress to provide for taking the Sixth Census or enumeration of the inhabitants of the United States, and for other purposes, and too, and in my presence, subscribed the above oath.
