From Charleston, West Virginia.

A list of West Virginia's most polluted streams has been approvedby the federal Environmental Protection Agency.

The list was compiled by the state Division of Environmental Protection and represents streams that fail to meet water quality standards.

D-E-P says there are 696 streams in the state that don't meet the standards. Industrial rivers such as the Ohio, Kanawha and Monongalia are on the list.

Of the 696 streams, 488 have been damaged by acid mine drainage, 60 have been hurt by acid rain and 99 are being polluted by unknown sources. The state's next polluted stream list will be prepared in two years.
