European Academy for Cultural and Scientific Developments

1.Programmatic guidelines:

On the basis of Sir Karl Popper´s concept of the „open society” the Academy for Cultural and Scientific Developments will deal with the challenging questions raised by new developments in modern economies (globalisation), the sciences, especially the biosciences (genetic engineering, brain research) and information technology. The Academy is focusing on elaborating the consequences all of these developments will have on fundamental aspects of the social, religious, ecological and legal framework of our societies. Traditional structures based on varying cultural backgrounds meet in the process of globalisation and are not only confronted with each other but also with the innovative processes which new technologies initiate on a worldwide basis. New structures of cultural understanding and international cooperation have to be developed in order to meet the far reaching demands of global change to the benefit of mankind. This not only refers to the relation between the orient and the occident, the northern and the southern hemisphere (developing countries) and specific cultural backgrounds involved in their mutual relations, but also to the latest developments we have just been witnessing at the end of this century: The fall of communism in the Eastern European countries has constituted an additional obligation for democratic countries to assist the transition states in developing solid foundations for a democratic lifestyle which includes a solid free market economy and a legal, social and ecological framework that allows people to enjoy the benefits of the new democratic era. Especially the young people in the Eastern European countries must be a focus of intensive cooperation.

Furthermore, specific topics arising from a global background like population growth, the change in the social and economic role of women, the future of our educational and health care systems as well as the role of the arts in transformation processes will have to be focused on very closely. The Academy will always remember and try to realize in its specific programs what the former Secretary General of the UNITED NATIONS U THANT once had set up as a guideline for the solidarity of mankind: "What you have done for the developing countries, you have done for the whole world."

2. Organisational structures

The founders of the Academy for Cultural and Scientific Developments are convinced that „open societies” (Karl Popper) can best meet the requirements connected with rapid global change. On the basis of the conviction that fundamentalism of any kind is a real danger for the peaceful, effective and successful development of the global network of modern societies the Academy for Cultural and Scientific Developments wants to spread through its seminars, workshops and lectures the individual and social capabilities to cope with the challenges global change means to all of mankind.. The Academy offers cooperation with universities or other research institutions abroad.
