The Australian Cattle Dog originated in Australia and was developed by cross
breeding a blue merle, smooth collie to a dingo. The Aussie is used to
herd cattle.
Size:
Males: 18 to 20 inches at the shoulders.
Females: 17 to 19 inches at the shoulder
Colors:
Blue or Red speckle.
Coat:
Double coated with the undercoat soft, furry and close. The outercoat is flat,
harsh, strong and shaggy, free from wooliness and curl.
Shedding is constant and heavy.
Temperament:
Very aloof with dogs or people.
Can be loving and loyal to entire family.
Are not usually trustworthy off lead.
Can be destructive if not properly trained.
Can be very vocal.
Excellent as guard dogs.
Should not be trusted with small children.
Usually not difficult to housebreak.
Usually good with other animals.
Reception to Training:
Excellent candidate in the hands of a skilled trainer.
Energy Level:
High
Health Problems:
Epilepsy, PRA, cataracts, allergies, hip displasia.
Summary:
This breed is a working breed and should be used as such. He is not
generally a good candidate as a "couch potato" family pet.
