CALGARY CANADA-CHINA FRIENDSHIP ASSOCIATION: A MEMBER OF THE FEDERATION OF CANADA CHINA FRIENDSHIP ASSOCIATIONS

OUR GOAL: To promote friendship between people in Canada and China by fostering mutual understanding and appreciation of each other's society, history and social and economic institutions. To promote cultural, educational, scientific, athletic and other exchanges between Canadian and Chinese people.

MEMBERSHIP: Membership is open to anyone interested in building friendship and understanding between Canadian and Chinese people.

OUR HISTORY:

1965: Canada-China Friendship associations began after New China established in 1949. 1970: Canada one of the first western countries to recognize New China. As films, books and speakers became available, federation associations provided information and encouraged interaction for mutual understanding.
During the cultural revolution, the 'bamboo curtain' was lowered and China was not accessible. By the mid-1970's groups began to tour China. After 1976, China began to reopen its doors to tourists.
1980: Federation of Canada-China Friendship Associations (FCCFA) formed, with 15 affiliates from Halifax to Victoria. Currently four associations remain in Ottawa, Winnipeg, Calgary and Victoria. FCCFA has taken more than 200 groups to China. These travelers returned to become active in local programs. As China opens up and more Chinese people come to Canada, the Federation's role is one of helping Canadians and Chinese people better understand one another.
