"Don't worry... I won't..." Ramza told Elena. Elena got back up, and returned to her seat. The Pink Floyd CD was still playing, and the subsonics started to rattle the paintings on the side of the wall. Ramza turned the bass down, and the paintings stopped rattling. She continued to read the book from the Pink Floyd CD, and found out it was a live version of another CD. Reading teaches a lot...
"Weather hasn't been bad, has it?" Ramza asked, and Elena nodded her head. She began humming Brain Damage, and Ramza just got up and left the room. Elena looked over, and saw Ramza had vanished.
"Gotta call Nate..." She picked up the phone, and found Nate's number on the Speed Dial. She pressed it, and the phone rang.
"Hello?" It was Tifa.
"Tifa? It's me... Ramza... is Nate home?" She asked.
"Yes, he is, Ramza, hold on." Tifa put Ramza on hold (Great, their hold button plays elevator music! She thought), and got Nate.
"Nate, you have a phone call."
"Who is it?"
"Ramza."
"Okay." Nate got up and answered the phone. "Ramza! Oh, it's so good to hear from you! How are you?"
"Well, besides the fact that I'm you, and you're me, no, I'm just great!" Nate ignored the sarcasm in her voice. "Come over to my house for a bit, will you?"
"Well, sure! Hold on." Nate walked over to Tifa. "Mom, can I go over to Ramza's house?"
"I don't see why not..." Tifa said, and Nate told Ramza it was okay. Tifa got Nate into the car, and they drove over to Ramza's house.
"Thanks, mom!" Nate got out of the car, and waved goodbye to Tifa. Tifa waved back, and left. Nate walked over, and knocked on the door. Elena opened the door.
"Hi... Nate. How are you?" It was very difficult to attempt to talk to Nate, now that he was in Ramza's body. "Fine. Ramza here?"
"Yeah. She's in her room." Nate walked over to Ramza's room and knocked.
"Come in." Nate opened the door. Ramza immediately jumped up and hugged him.
"Woah! Hold on! Ramza!" She let go of her grip, and they sat on her bed.
"Hopefully you've been okay."
"Yeah. It's just... different... I had to go to the clothes shop and buy all girl's clothes.. heh, heh, heh... That was an inviting experience. How can you stand wearing pastel shades?"
"Well... I like light colors. It appears the rest of the female sex does too. Fortunately, I didn't have to shop. Mom did it for me. Heh... she knew what would happen." Ramza gave a smile with that one. They both stood up.
"I never realized how short I was. Five foot seven is real small, compared to six feet," Ramza said. Nate snorted.
"G'heh. That goes without saying. What time is it?" Nate looked at the clock, and saw it was only five o'clock. "Hmm... Dallas is on now." Nate and Ramza went into the living room, and turned on the TV. The Dallas theme song came on, and for the next hour the both of them enjoyed watching it.
"Nate, don't turn out to be JR, okay?"
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"I always wanted to tell you... that I... I love you, Nate!" She buried her face in his chest, and a surprised face came on Nate's face.
"Ramza... you... don't mean that, do you?"
"Of course I do! If I didn't, I wouldn't say that." Ramza's reasoning was good. She wouldn't joke like that.
"All... right... I guess. I sorta... love you too... but not like how our parents love each other! We're friends."
"No, Nate... I love you like our parents love each other. That's why I jumped, and stopped you, and Kefka switched us then... He knew I loved you. He thought that it would mock me even more to make me you... We don't belong like this. Unless dad and the others find a cure or something, we'll stay like this." Ramza just uttered the bitter truth, and Nate bit his lip. She was right. Nate stood up.
"Look... let's just enjoy ourselves while we can. And if you really do love me, you'll take me on a date." Nate put his head up, closed his eyes, and did the arms-crossed defiantly look. After a few seconds, his eyes opened up.
"Don't tell me I did what I just did."
"You did it."
"I told you not to tell me!"
"You were being sarcastic." Nate rolled his eyes at that remark.
"Look, if you want to go on a date with me, we'll have a few things to do."
"Right. We'll go eat and see a concert."
"That can work."
"I'll go and get the money I have stowed away. There's this place my mom and dad always go to on the other side of town. We can walk there."
"Okay."
"And we'll see a Neil Crystal concert."
"Fine."
"Mom! Nate and I are going out for a while!"
"Okay! Be back at Ten." Elena called from the other room. Nate and Ramza grinned. They ran out the door before Elena could fathom what she just said.
* * *
"I think I'll have... The full rack of ribs with an orange soda." Nate said. The waiter nodded, and looked towards Ramza.
"I'll have... a Steak combo platter. With French fries and a SuperCola." Ramza said. The waiter nodded his head towards her, and left.
"Remember, if anyone asks us who we are, I'm Ramza Bouregaurd and you're Nathan Strife." Nate said. Ramza nodded her head. Their table was next to the window, and Ramza looked out. The night sky was littered with stars, and lights from the cities. One light on the ground was the brightest. It was Cosmo Canyon. You could see Bugenhagen's observatory from the restaurant. The waiter came with the rack of ribs, and Ramza's steak. After he left, they began to dig in.
"Hmm... It's different
not having to have our parents here and have them help us." Ramza grinned
at that one. Nate was right. She began to remember her first time at a
restaurant like this. She was six years old. At this same restaurant. Her
parents and her grandparents were there. She had to sit at the end in an
extra chair. Reno's parents had died a long time ago, but Elena's were
still around, so they had
fun saying how much Ramza had grown, and asking her how school was and
other assorted questions. Ramza had a hamburger, and her parents and grandparents
had what they always had at special occasions: lobster or steak. The hamburger
was not cooked according to specifications, and Ramza had choked on part
of it. She had to go to the emergency room, and had to have an operation
to remove the meat, since the Heimlech maneuver didn't work. Her parents
sued the restaurant, and got money to pay off the bills and other whatnot.
Nate and Ramza finished their dinners, and paid the waiter the check. They left, and went to the concert hall to see Neil Crystal. He sung his normal compliment of concert songs.
"Okay, will couple number... #94 come up to the stage?" Nate and Ramza checked their tickets, and sure enough, they read #94. They got up, and went into the stage.
"What's your names?" Neil asked them.
"My name is Ramza Bouregaurd," Nate said.
"And I'm Nathan Strife," Ramza said.
"Alright. You're gonna sing a song with me."
"Well... we don't sing THAT great."
"Trust me. Nick, play track 32." Nick, the technician, nodded, and played track 32, "Forever in Blue Jeans." Nate led it off.
"Money talks... but it can't sing and dance and it can't walk..."
"As long as I can have you here with me..."
"I'd much rather be... Forever in blue jeans."
Nate, Neil, and Ramza sung the song. After it was all said and done, the audience clapped, and they walked down. Neil finished the concert, and they left.
"We didn't do half bad, did we?" Nate said.
"Nope... I didn't think we would get clapped... I thought we'd be booed off the stage!" They laughed at that remark. Nate and Ramza walked down to the beach.
"Quiet..." Ramza said, and Nate shut up. A _thing_ washed up on the beach. It looked like some sort of a gun, but it had no round hole for bullets to come out. It had some sort of light amplification dish on it, and a power meter was at the side. "This looks awfully familiar."
"Sure does." Nate remarked. Ramza moved it around, and found a button.
"Push me, it says. Should I push it?"
"Curiosity killed the cat, but go ahead." Nate remarked. Ramza pushed the button, and a beam shot up from the gun. It split in two ways, and struck Nate and Ramza. They were paralyzed for a minute, and fainted when the beam stopped. A few minutes later, Ramza woke up.
"Nate! Wait... hold on... I'm... ME!!!" Ramza shot up. She saw her trim figure, her medium bust, and long, blonde hair. She ran over and shook Nate in joy. "Nate! We're ourselves again! Well... we're still old, but at least we're ourselves! Nate? Come on! Wake up! This isn't funny." Ramza shook Nate, but he didn't seem to want to wake up. Her eyes grew wide with fear, and she picked him up.
"Oof! Nate, you weigh a ton!" Ramza managed to drag Nate back to her house.
"Mom! Come here!" Elena immediately ran over.
"Ramza! Are you yourself again?"
"Yes! But something happened to Nate in the process. I'll explain later. Let's get him to the hospital." Ramza and Elena got Nate into her car, and they drove off to the hospital.
"I'll call Cloud." Elena picked up her cell phone, and called Cloud. He immediately met them at the hospital.
"What happened?"
"I'll explain later.
I'm my regular self again, but something happened to Nate. Follow us."
Cloud followed Ramza and Elena, and was already on the phone talking to
Tifa. She was on her way. Nate was on the bed, unconscious. A pacemeter
showed that he was fine, except that he was pretty much not existing in
this world for a moment. Tifa ran in the room, and saw Ramza standing up,
and
Nate on the bed. She demanded
an explanation; Ramza gave one. Ramza took out the gun she found, and handed
it to Tifa. She examined it, and said it was the same one Kefka shot them
with to switch them in the first place.
"That's why it looked familiar. But why did Nate get affected like this?" Ramza questioned. That was a question that definitely needed an answer.
Author's Notes
Yes, that IS a Neil Diamond Cameo role. I just got the three disc boxed set. :) I was in Maine on the weekend of the twenty fourth through the twenty sixth, and hurt myself during the trip. Some of you may remember a few months ago when I overextended a calf muscle. I did it again, except it wasn't as severe. So, I can't do anything fun for the next few days.
