Our 1997 Summer Vacation

Note - Clicking on many of the pictures below will bring up a larger version of the picture.

Our summer vacation started on Thursday, August 14. We drove down to Garden City Beach, South Carolina, which is at the south end of the Myrtle Beach area. We spent Thursday and Friday nights in Garden City with Wes, Dee, and Nick Wood. Thursday night, Sharon and I had an enjoyable dinner with Wes and Dee at the Crab House at Broadway at the Beach. After dinner, we played "see how much you can get out of the fish food machine for a quarter" and "feed the carps".

Friday morning, Matt, Wes, and I went surf fishing with Ron Horn, who was also down there vacationing with his family. We caught a few fish, including a small shark, but no keepers. Wes, Nick, Matt, and I spent the afternoon playing 18 holes at Indigo Creek Golf Course while Dee and Sharon went shopping.

After packing up and having breakfast on Saturday, Dee and Wes started their trip back to King George. We headed south, taking Nick with us. We stopped at the Sewee Visitor & Environmental Center at Francis Marion National Forest, and K-Mart in Charleston to get some more golf balls.

Where is Edisto Island? After one more stop for a snack of Ben & Jerry's ice cream, we arrived at Fairfield Ocean Ridge at Edisto Island (another Edisto link) around 4:00, and got everything unloaded. We had the back of the Explorer filled, a car-top carrier, and a trailer with bikes and other stuff. After unpacking, we made a quick stop by the beach, and then went out to dinner. We attempted to go to Gracie Mansion Cafe. We left after waiting for 15 minutes to be seated without anyone even acknowledging that we existed. I highly recommend not going there if you every visit Edisto Island. We ended up going to Buck's Pizza.

We spent Sunday swimming and fishing at the beach, and playing golf. I caught a couple of small fish. Matt, Nick, and I played the front nine from the blue tees at Fairfield Golf Course in the afternoon. The course has plenty of water, which resulted in quite a few balls getting wet. We thought we'd go out for a decent dinner, but almost every place was closed, so we ended up back at Buck's Pizza again.

Monday was our first trip up to Charleston. We stopped by the Charleston Visitors Center, had lunch at Melvin's Southern Barbeque, then went to Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum. We toured the aircraft carrier Yorktown (CV-10), the submarine Clamagore (SS-343), the destroyer Laffey (DD-459), the Coast Guard cutter Ingham, and a mock up of a Vietnam naval support base.

After a stop at Walmart to try to find some golf balls that weren't attracted to water, we spent Monday evening watching the Piedmont Boll Weevils beat the Charleston River Dogs, 3-1. Nick was chosen to compete in the "dizzy bat" contest, which we won. He devastated a 12 year old to win free tokens, a hot dog, and a drink from Frankie's Fun Park.

We were back at the beach Tuesday morning, and spent the afternoon at Edisto Beach State Park. We found a lot of shells, and Matt and Nick caught some live sand dollars. For dinner we went to the Pavilion Restaurant, which was decent.

Wednesday morning we went back to the beach again. After lunch, Matt and Nick went to compete in a miniature golf tournament, and Sharon and I went for a bike ride. We picked up some shrimp which we later had for dinner. Nick, Matt, and I also played the back nine at the Fairfield Golf Course that afternoon. We played from the red tees to try to keep more balls dry. Sharon and I decided to try the jacuzzi that night. Next time we use a jacuzzi, I need to remember to hide the liquid soap from Sharon. Bubble baths in a jacuzzi are sort of overwhelming.

We went back up to Charleston on Thursday. After eating breakfast at Denny's, despite Nick's begging us to go to Krispy Kreme, we rode a boat out to Fort Sumter. We went shopping downtown at Market Square, where I picked up several hot sauces. We then took a quick drive through the grounds of the Citadel, and then headed out to Frankie's Fun Park. We played miniature golf, then Matt, Nick, and I rode go carts. We went to a good Mexican restaurant for dinner, El Dorado.

We went to the beach again Friday morning. Matt, Nick and I played a full 18 holes of golf in the afternoon. For dinner, Matt and Nick had dinner delivered from their favorite restaurant on the island, Buck's Pizza. Sharon and I went to the island's fancy restaurant, the Old Post Office Restaurant. It was excellent. We spent the rest of the evening starting to get things packed up.

We finished loading the car and trailer Saturday morning and started home. We stopped for breakfast at the Sea Cow Eatery, and then hit the road. We stopped at the Artisans Center in Walterboro, SC, and at South of the Border. It was strange seeing all of the South of the Border signs without any having "Pedro sez" on them. We also stopped at Parker's BBQ (our favorite in North Carolina) in Wilson, for dinner. We finally arrived back home at about 9:30.
